Chapter 10 the date that went wrong

I got ready for my date. I wore this fancy cocktail dress that I also wore in homecoming. I painted my face with light make – up. It’s past six. I heard the doorbell ring. Dad opened the door. Mom was seated on my bed – concerned. I went downstairs my hand clutched the cold metal sling of my bag. I was panting heavily.

“You look really beautiful,” Jeff smiled. He took my hand and led me to his car.

He drove me to this fancy looking restaurant. He parked his car and we went inside. When we got there, our order was ready. The waiter laid it on the table. We talked about random stuff like life, modeling and even politics. There was something wrong about tonight. Right, there was no cupid. I sat there with a very gorgeous man but I wasn’t even love struck by the smiles he set on his face. I then looked to my left…Austin. He was staring at us from outside.

“Excuse me for a moment, I need to take care of something,” I turned to Jeff. He nodded and I went outside.

“What the heck are you doing here?” I yelled.

“I’m watching over you and that guy!”

“Austin!” I called.

“I’ll be fine. We’ll head home by the time we finish.”

“I guess, I’m just wasting my precious time here then,” he turned around.

“Wait, what? You’re wasting your time?”

“Well, yeah!  It’s not like I came here to watch you say yes when he asks you to be his girlfriend,” he turned to me again.

“You know what… I have had enough. You wasted an hour to be here when I’ve wasted my whole life to watch your back.”

“Whole life? Aren’t you exaggerating a bit?” I took off my cover up.

“What happened to you?” Austin asked.

“Exaggerating? You think all this scars and bruises are exaggerating?” I went on, “I’ve had this since grades school. I was always there for you, Austin. I was there when you wanted to die because of that girl you dated. I was there when needed you needed someone to back you up in a game I’ve never even played in my whole life. I was there to help you forget about here and apparently, forget about me too. I also was there when you got hooked to another girl. And let’s not forget to mention that I was there when you needed someone to help you with the decorations for you monthsary.”

“I was there because I freaking love you. I wanted us to stay friends so I never told you. I didn’t want you to think of me as a poser and never speak to me again. I’m not exaggerating, Austin; I just God damn fell for you,” I slapped him then left.

Jeff stood before me. He handed me his coat. He placed his arm around my waist and we head to the car. Before we went inside, Jeff pulled me close to him and started leaning in to kiss me. I kept pushing him away but he just won’t budge.

“Get your hands off her,” Austin commanded.

“Who the hell are you to say that to me,” Jeff raises his arm and swings a knuckle at Austin.

Austin does the same. They are now laying fists at each other’s faces. I pulled Jeff away from Austin and stood between them.

“Stop!” I yelled. “You’re not killing each other without hurting me,” I added.

“Austin, go back home. I’ll handle things from here.”

“NO! You’re coming with me.”

“I said go home Austin. I’ll deal with this guy first.”

Austin left. I hopped inside his car and he brought me home.

“I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself,” Jeff apologized.

I slapped him and opened the door.

Jeff stopped me, “I’m sorry okay? I got carried away. I heard everything you said to that guy.”

 “You what?”

“I thought that maybe if I kissed you you’ll change your mind. I really do like you, Bre. Hearing you confess to him just hurt so much.”

“I’m sorry I had let it come to this. I thought that maybe if I went out with you, I’d forget about him. Maybe, I would be happy for once in my life. I’m so sorry Jeff. I really thought it would work between us but…”

“But you love him. I know. I knew all along but I just couldn’t admit it to myself.” He turned to me, “I hope this won’t affect our friendship.”

I just smiled at him. He had every right to be mad - I was using him. We had everything resolved before I hoped out and he left.

I went to my veranda and threw another stone to Austin’s window. This time, he went out.

“Sorry about what happened,” I apologized.

“So… you love me huh?” I blushed.

“Stop making fun of me. I only asked you to come out because I wanted to apologize,” I went inside my room and closed the door.

I was panting. I felt every ounce blood rushing to my cheeks and heart was beating even faster.

“We’ll talk about that soon,” Austin yelled.

“I will never see you again,” I yelled back.

I ran to my bed and sunk my face into the pillow – that was embarrassing.

Morning came. I went downstairs to eat breakfast. Austin was in the living room. There was no sign of my family inside the house. I tiptoed back to my room when Austin turned to me,

“Ahem… What do you want for breakfast?” I gulped. I ran back to my room.

“You don’t want to eat? That’s fine with me. You’ll come out of there some time,” Austin teased.

I got the bath tub ready. I filled it with water and bubbles and sunk in.

Whats wrong with me? There’s nothing wrong with admitting it already. He knows anyway – I told him. I just had to spill it. I guess anger got the best of me but this is for the best right?

After minutes of being in the water, I got out and dressed. I took a deep breath and went out. Austin was in the dining room setting the table.

“Come one! I know you’re hungry.” Austin gestured.

I slowly went down the stairs and head to the dining table.
