I awoke to the sound of hooves hitting the ground of our small and humble town. I had absolutely no idea what lay ahead or how much it would change my life forever. The man on the horse had a reason for trotting through the night and disrupting the peacefulness. He told us that the British army were coming by the thousands just across the river. A rush of excitement flowed through my veins as I watched the man gallop away. I tried to gather my disorganized thoughts. Other men, along with my father gathered the militia and the muster book and brought them to the towns church. I raced there, nervous and hoping that my father would allow me to sign the book. The closer I got to the front of the line, the faster my heart began to beat. There he was, my father. He took his eyes off the paper, placed them on me and did not say a word. After signing, we were ordered to collect and load our firearms and head to the common. When we got to the common, all we could do is wait for the redcoats to come. Father, the unarmed reverend, and Johnathan Harrington were on the frontline of battle. We eventually saw the color red flooding around the common. We were vastly outnumbered and didn't stand a chance against the redcoats. My mind was racing. We aren't prepared for this! What did we get ourselves into! I quickly began to realize that this was not a children's game anymore. All of my thoughts were jumbled together and they didn't make any sense. When I heard the first gunshot, I snapped back into reality. Death spread like an epidemic across the common. The air smelled of gun powder and sweat, the people of my town were running to save themselves, some were not so lucky. Not one of us cocked our guns or even aimed to fire. My heart sank to my feet as I saw my father shot by a redcoat, I couldn't breathe. I ran over to him, you should have seen the look in his eyes. I tried to stop it but it was too late. How could someone you love so much be gone in an instant? The color crimson spread all around, it seeped into the grass and covered my clothes. I found myself running for my life, there was nothing I could do for my father anymore. I couldn't take it anymore, the pain, it was overwhelming. I will make them pay or I will die trying.
