Merlin and Arthur were in Arthur's bed chamber. Merlin was removing Arthur's armour; he had just finished training his soon-to-be knights. He was exhausted.
Arthur tilted his head back and sighed in relief as his chain-mail was finally removed. "Thank you, Merlin," he said lightly.
Merlin stared at him for a moment or two before responding, "You're-you're welcome."
Arthur had been acting weird lately, giving compliments, saying Thank you, not asking for "special" favours. Merlin was still trying to get used to it.
"Don't forget to polish those, Merlin, I'll need them for tomorrow," Arthur reminded him.
"Of course."
Just as Merlin was about to leave, Arthur stopped him, "Wait, a moment. I need to, uh, talk to you." He sounded uncertain, even in his own ears. He hated that.
Merlin turned, "What about?"
"Um," Arthur looked around nervously. He walked to the door and locked it. He shut the window.
"Arhtur, you're beginning to frighten me," Merlin said.
Arthur smirked, "Oh, nothing, really. I just-I need to tell you something. Something serious."
Arthur stopped walking around in front of Merlin. He put a hand on his shoulder, making Merlin's breath hitch.
"Merlin," Arthur's breath was a bit shaky, "you know that, by now, I think of you as a friend, right?" Merlin nodded. Arthur cleared his throat. "Well, I've been, um, thinking-"
"That's probably a first, eh?" Merlin joked.
Arthur gazed at him sternly. Merlin looked down, "Sorry.."
"As I was saying," he continued, "I've been thinking about you, you are my friend, Merlin, but, I just-i thought that, you know, maybe I could be more than, um, more than you're friend..."he trailed off.
Merlin gulped, "You-you mean, like... But I thought that you and... Well... I..." Merlin stuttered.
Arthur raised his eyebrows, "Me and...?"
"Didn't you fancy that, that one woman..."
Arthur laughed. "No no, Merlin. After I was with a few women I found that I, ah, didn't prefer to be with women... I, well. I realised I wanted to be with you."
"Oh, I see," Merlin licked his lips. "And, you know that I prefer men over women?"
Arthur pulled his hand back. "Oh, I-I'm sorry. i didn't know that-"
Merlin chuckled. "Don't apologise. I was messing with you. I so rarely get to," he smiled.
Arthur's heart sped as Merlin smiled. He forced himself to speasteadily, "I didn't appreciate that, Merlin."
His smile faded.
"Back to my original point; I fancy you, Merlin. And well," he smirked, "let's face it, who wouldn't fancy me?"
Merlin rolled his eyes. "You're still an ass, I see."
"I may have been told that before." They both chuckled.
"Merlin."
"Hmm?"
"You haven't answered my question."
