Chapter 1:

Ashton excitedly paid the cab driver as he stepped out; rubbing his military shoes on the cold pavement he was stepping on and just inhaling the fresh air…

He missed this… He missed Cheshire…

The man gave him a small smile and a salute to accompany with, which he returned gratefully. He looked around his surroundings, smiling proudly, it’s been a tad different since the last time he got here and it’s refreshing, it still feels like home.

He takes his cap off and ruffles his curly hair.

Man I stink…

“I really need to shower.” He mutters before walking towards the house he knew by heart. He grins to himself as he walks the little stairs towards the porch. He knocks a few times and no one answers so he gives it a second because maybe Nina is in the shower…

But after a minute or two, he knocks again and rings the doorbell several times but still no one answers. He furrows his eyebrows when he twists the doorknob and it opens. He steps inside the house, forgetting about his military boots and the metal necklace dangling on his broad chest.

“Nina? Nina!” He calls out but still no one answers… He sighs and looks around the house, smiling to himself when he realizes nothing changed that much. He takes a step forward and looks at the picture frame in front of him, chuckling when he sees the silly smile on Nina’s face and his when they were kids.

He puts his duffle bag down and rushes upstairs, making a u-turn to the left because that’s where Nina’s bedroom is. He opens it without any hesitation. “Nina!” He cheers.

But instead of Nina, Gemma, Nina’s sister is the one sitting on her bed, changing the covers and fixing her photo albums, her study desk, and dusting the window sills before changing the curtains.

“Oh… Ashton.” Gemma says, a bit startled and Ashton gives her a small smile.

“Where’s Nina?” And Gemma goes stoic, fisting the fabric of the bedspread in her smooth hands and Ashton wonders why. Gemma finally blinks her eyes and releases the fabric in her tight hold, she places her palm flat on it and straightens the wrinkle she made.

“Uhm… Didn’t you receive any letter?” She asks her voice small and once again… Ashton furrows his brows. “Yeah I did but the last time I received one was on March? I think?” Gemma gulps and nods her eyes downcast.

“Is something wrong?” Ashton quickly adds, his heart beat accelerating and his breath hitches in his throat. He’s been gone for a year and a month now and Nina and him we’re constantly writing each other’s letters until April came and it stopped.

“We might wanna… Take this down the kitchen and I’ll explain it to you over tea.” Gemma wiped her clammy hands together, gazed at one of her pictures with her sister and gave Ashton a feeble smile. He gave her a nod and they got out of the room and she locked the door.
