I paced around my living room, running my fingers along my angular jaw as I waited for him to answer his phone. It kept ringing and ringing, then I got his machine. I closed my eyes and inhaled sharply, waiting for the beep, "Luke, hey. It's Jen. I know it's been a while since we . . . broke up, but I just wanted to give you a call." I regretted saying everything as soon as the words were spilling out of my mouth. "It's been so weird not hearing from you. I wish we could meet face-to-face, but I know you wouldn't want to. I miss you. I really want to talk to you, so if you want to, call me whenever you get this. Bye, I guess."
I clicked end and collapsed on my couch, covering my face with my hands. Why did I even bother?
Three years ago, I had met the guy who I was positive was my soulmate, Lucas. We broke up two weeks ago, and I wasn't sure where my life was going anymore. Whenever I was around him, I could see what my future would be like crystal-clear; married to him with our children surrounding us. Now, my future was a blur.
The last few months of our relationship were rough—we were fighting every single night over the most useless things. I was the one to end it, but I wasn't sure if I should have ended things so quickly. Maybe if we took a short-term break from seeing each other, it would've worked out. But, when I just sent him that voicemail, I felt like I was starting to look desperate.
Startling me, my phone was ringing. I got up and took it off its holder. "Hello?"
"Jennifer?"
Luke's voice sounded on the other line, causing bile to rise up to my throat. I gulped. "Hey, Luke. Uhm . . . how-how are you?"
"I'm hanging in there, you?"
I chewed on my bottom lip. "I'm not sure," was all I could muster. "So, you got my message. I know I sounded really desperate."
He chuckled under his breath. "No, you're good. But, what did you want to talk about?"
I had realized that I was crossing my fingers, hoping that question wouldn't have come up. "Oh! Uhm, I-I just wanted to see how you were doing. There's been a lot of tension between us so I figured I'd try to start conversation."
"Oh," he said, astounded. "Okay. Well, I have to get going for work. I guess I'll talk to you . . . sometime?"
"Yeah! Okay!" I had sounded too enthusiastic than I had intended. "Uhm, bye, then."
"Bye."
Then, the line went dead.

"Jen, you have to try to get over Luke," my best friend since middle school, Kyla, continued on her lecture about how I have to start trying to move on from Luke. We were sitting in the middle of a Starbucks, and the people around us were staring whenever she would raise her voice. I rubbed my lips together and looked down at my reflection in the dark coffee. "Look," she started, leaning in. "I know this is hard for you. You guys have been together for three years, I understand. I really do. But I think it's time that you start looking for other guys. I can set you up with a guy."
I rolled my eyes. "No, don't—"
"Come on, Jen! Please? I already have a few cute guys in mind that I think you'll love. Please?" She stuck her bottom lip out, faking a frown. I gave her a look, then sighed and nodded. Her eyes brightened. "Yes!"
