Extra Meanings

As these are in fact stories, and I personally see story telling as an art form, this is one of the ways I express myself.

Art is free to be interpreted however you wish it to be; you could have every inch of the plot line explained to you over and over again and you could still see the novel in a completely different light.

Different aspects of stories speak out to different people in different ways, but here are a few examples of what my own imagination took from mine -

Both characters smoke

The intention of this aspect of the book was definitely not intended to just be something to make both characters appear cooler or more badass or anything like that.

However, Will Carter likes to think he comes across this way. Ben Lovell smokes but reserves the fact that he does, almost ashamed as he keeps it on the down low.

My thoughts on this were that Carter had over time become hooked on the nicotine he consumed. He was hooked on the feeling of being able to let go, but this was a false friend as he became dependant on it. Because of this he saw himself as weak for being so attached. This feeling of being so reliant also represented his love for Lovell, wishing he was strong enough to live without him because he felt weak being so in love. Lovell, on the other hand smoked because he simply though, well, we all die anyway why not. The feeling of being unmotivated, just like he was when Carter wasn't around.

In short, Carter's smoking replicates the feeling of belittling yourself for being dependant on something as you feel weak by doing so. Lovell's habit stands in place of feeling ashamed to admit your sadness as you feel it is your own fault and no body else's problem.
