LAMENT

THE START

Anamika, the daughter of Tukaram and Nandi, was the only child of the family. Thus, she was the daughter parents always tend to spoil. So that's another perk for every parent, as the daughter is the light of their eyes, their biggest concern being her marriage and the dowry that had to be paid. But these parents were never worried about the dowry, as they were one of the wealthiest family of farmers in the village.

THE MAHARASTRA DROUGHTS 1992

Summer may still be a couple of months away, but the 3,905 villagers of the 12 districts of Marathwada and western Maharashtra, facing one of the worst droughts since 1992, started migrating looking for better condition. Somehow, Tukaram and his family survived this challenge, but they were very well aware of the other seasonal problems, which may leave them with nothing. They still have a daughter to be wedded soon, so that was a grim future to think about. Accepting no more delays, Tukaram and Nandi made up their mind about the solution they needed to find. Eventually, they decided that it was best to sell a part of their land, of which 3/4 will be used for marriage purposes and 1/4 as dowry.

THE FIX

Anamika was just 19 years old at the moment. Here marriage was fixed with a server, but all that was well waived off, as Chandan was Mumbai-based, an own house and had no children. Without trying to find out more about Chandan, basing their decision more on the vague knowledge about his background and general behavior, not trying to see if the two were really compatible, the parents rushed her into marriage.
