Prologue

Senior year began in a week. And Scarlett Lovejoy was scared. Terrified, even. No one knew how she felt on the inside. Everyone saw the picture perfect girl with the admirable life. She had perfect grades and was the most gorgeous girl in the school. She was 5'10", with thick, straight, brown hair. Her eyes were a deep blue and had a strange depth to them. They revealed all of her, yet kept her secrets. They were simply beautiful. Her nails were always painted, and she walked with the poise of a model. Every item in her wardrobe was designer. All of her teachers loved her, and she took six AP classes. Scarlett had competed for figure skating and gymnastics. It was all a show. Every little detail of her life was a fake. It was a cover up for the feelings she had let build up over the last eighteen years.

Scarlett had never known a father. He had passed away a year after she was born. A truck driver had spun off the road and struck her father's car on the way home from work. Life had never really been the same after that. Her mother couldn't even bear to look at Scarlett, claiming she saw too much of her father in her. Mrs.Lovejoy immersed herself in her interior design business. Scarlett often woke up in the morning after her mother had already left, and went to bed before her mother came home from work. Their large house seemed lonely, and Sky couldn't even call it home. They lived in one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the area, yet there was always an emptiness Scarlett could never place. It was almost as if Scarlett had forgotten the meaning of true happiness.

They had a full time maid, Harper Collins. She had been Scarlett's only support throughout her life. In fact, she gave Scarlett her nickname, Sky. Ms.Collins always claimed that everything was going to be okay, and that the worst of the storm was over. After all, everything gets worse before it gets better. Sky had heard these same comforting words for so long, she almost believed them. She had tricked her brain into believing this, but Sky's heart kept aching.

This pretense had gone on for so long, Sky had forgotten what it felt like to really be happy. She needed to get away, and that was where her summer job came into play. Then, she met the new boy, and her world turned upside down. Again.
