After leaving his office I ran towards the elevator, elated that I had the chance to get the job. After getting off from the 21st floor I tried finding my way back to the lobby. The more I walked the more uncomfortable the feeling got. My bladder felt ready to explode and if I didn't find a bathroom now I would pee in my skirt.
I retraced my steps to find myself back in the main hall and the receptionist desk was there but Sophie was no where to be found. Instead there was a new girl and upon a closer look I could see her name was Josephine.
Rushing over to her I politely asked her where the closest bathroom was. After receiving directions I speed walked to the bathroom. I relieved myself and walked out of the stall to wash my hands.
When I glanced at the mirror is when I saw my reflection for the first time today. My curly hair was tied into a bun on the top of my head and miraculously there wasn't a curl out of place. My lips were pinker than usual due to the fact that I almost bit my lip of while waiting for my interview. My big hazel eyes had bags under them. My long eyelashes framed my tired eyes. I guess me and Mr McKinley had one thing in common.
I looked down towards my black tshirt that was tucked into my long brown skirt with my brown bag over my shoulder. If I'm going to be Mr McKinley's PA I had to start looking the part. With this thought in mind I made the decision to spend my first paycheck in improving my wardrobe. Nothing fancy but a dress or two may be nice.
With this thought in mind I exited the bathroom and ran right into Sophie.
"Woah Delilah. Your still here?"
"Yes. I had to use the bathroom."
"I'm not gonna ask you if got the job because I don't want to be nosy. But I do want to invite you to lunch"
"Oh no. I'm sorry I have to be somewhere. " I needed to get out of here before she realized I was lying and had no where to go.
"Oh come on. Please" she pleaded
What is her problem she doesn't even know me. "Sorry I just dont feel like going out to eat"
"Alright rain check?" She sighed
"Umm sure. I gotta go. Bye Sophie"
After we said our goodbyes I started my walk to the bus station. When I stepped outside the heat wave made me want to sneak back into the cool air of McKinley Enterprises.
The further I walked the thirstier I got. I pulled a water bottle from my bag as I found a cool roof of a restaurant to sit under. I picked out my bag of chips and seeing as it was nearly noon now I decided to eat a little more of my chips.
I took out my bus schedule and saw that the next bus is coming at 12:15pm. Getting up I walked to the bus stop with hopes that maybe the bus might come earlier than usual. I sat down on the waiting seats as I waited for the bus to come.
After a two hour bus ride later I had made it home. The bright yellow note taped to my door was normal routine for me.
I would take the note, open it, read how my landlord needs my rent then I would throw it out.
This day was such a long day. Walking into the corner of my living room I thought about how much I missed my uncle. He was the only reason why I was considered for McKinley Enterprises.
Both my parents died when I was sixteen and since I was a minor I had to have someone take care of me. I remember the lawyers going to both my mother and fathers family but no one wanted the burden of having another mouth to feed.
So just like that I was sent to a foster home and at the age of sixteen I was torn away from my life and friends.
I have always grown up poor so I'm used to it but that doesn't mean that I like it.
I spent two years in a foster home. I spent those years working to save up some money. My foster home provided me with an online education so I was able to get my high school degree and save some money. Those two years were awful but after I started cooperating it wasn't that bad.
On my eighteenth birthday is when I met my uncle. We connected instantly and in a way to make up some amends he paid for me to achieve my business degree in college.
My uncle was a kind and very giving man. He always insisted on buying a house for me but I made sure that he only payed for education related things.
Sometimes its hard to believe that he got diagnosed with cancer only five months ago. And as a final gift to me my uncle left me all his money and a recommendation to McKinley Enterprises.
My uncle was a major donor to McKinley Enterprises when it first started out. Therefore when my uncle called the company while lying on his death bed for me to get a job there, McKinley Enterprises had no choice but to accept their very generous donor's offer.
My uncle always knew that I was very independent. I didn't want his money and I refused to use any part of his money to give myself a luxurious life. His money will always be used for education or any life or death emergencies.
After he passed I used the little money that I had to secure this apartment. Then after searching for weeks I got the job at Andys. That has always been my life and I have gotten used to it. The hunger doesn't even bother me anymore.
