Happiness is just a foot away

Chapter one Olivia and Shell

"Why? Why can't I be human? Why can't I experience love and hate like you?" Olivia shouted at her best friend, Shell. "Why would you want to be human like me when you can be a mermaid? If we could switch bodies I totally would but it's just not possible Olivia so stop acting crazy!"

All Olivia ever wanted was to be human ever since she met Shell. She wants to be able to feel love exactly the way Shell described it. "Love makes you feel things you never knew you could, it makes your chest tingle and hurt and that feeling spreads across your body and you feel all numb but in a good way, it's the most addictive drug you'll ever get your hands on, love can kill, love can heal, love is horrible, love is beautiful." Olivia recited Shells words to herself over and over before she felt a tear fall down her cheek. Sadness, happiness, fear and jealousy where the only emotions mermaids could feel and damn it sucked.

Night after night Olivia would think about being human, she would do ANYTHING to feel Shell's warm embrace against her cold skin. Mortals where terrified of mermaids ever since a shapeshifter disguised as a mermaid started the biggest tsunami earth has ever seen and killed thousands. The mortals wanted to protect themselves so they decided to find a witch to put a curse on mermaids so that whenever they touched a mortal they would be turned to stone and brought to the deepest part of the ocean to slowly chip away until you're left with nothing but the memory of some mermaid who once mattered to someone.

When Shell and Olivia first met, Olivia  was being tormented by some teenagers with spears. Shell adored mermaids and always knew it wasn't them who started that tsunami. Shell was filled with anxiety but seeing the terror in Olivia's eyes she got filled with courage and grabbed a spear a teenager dropped and charged at the biggest guy, she stabbed him right in the head and the others ran like their lives depended on it (they actually where next to die) Olivia thanked Shell and was just about to swim away when Shell burst into tears and started having a panic attack blubbering words like "dead, po-police, jail.. WHAT DO I DO?" Olivia knew she had to pay Shell a favour so she found a boat and told Shell to get on. Shell was still crying when she asked Olivia "uh where are you taking me?" "I'm bringing you to a small safe island close to my home where you can live" Olivia replied happily.

When they got to the island Shell thanked Olivia multiple times, as Olivia was swimming away Shell yelled out "wait! I never got your name" "it's Olivia, here's a shell, blow it if you need me"

An hour later Shell got bored and decided to blow the shell, Olivia was there in 5 minutes. "Hey Shell what do you need?" "Oh nothi- wait.. How do you know my name??" "I can read your mind obviously, also thanks babe you're pretty hot too" Olivia replied with a smirk. Shell was blushing when Olivia burst into laughter "I'm just joking! Mermaids can't read minds, mortals fall for that every time, I heard you talking on the phone when I was getting stabbed" Shell was thankful Olivia wasn't serious about reading minds.. Or else things would get awkward fast..

Olivia was thankful to finally have a friend to talk to, she told Shell the story about the shapeshifter and the tsunami and Shell was glowing with excitement, "I knew it!" She also told her how she couldn't touch mortals but Shell already knew that but it still made her sad remembering she would never be able to hug Olivia. Every day Olivia and Shell would hangout, Shell in the boat and Olivia swimming along. When Shell would get tired of rowing they stopped and just talked for hours.

Now two years later here they are, Shell has a nice home on the island and Olivia visits her everyday. Olivia has never actually seen inside of the house but she knows it's beautiful because everyday Shell wakes up with a big smile and a glow that even mortals could see.

Today was Shell's sixteenth birthday, Olivia's dad gave Shell gils that where only visible when she was in water. Shell was so excited that she immediately jumped in the water and wouldn't get out for hours. As Olivia watched Shell swim her fingertips started to tingle but she thought nothing of it "probably just the cold water" she never would've thought that that little thing would be the beginning of something incredible.
