as a child, there were no barbie dolls for girls of color.
at least not where i lived.
they all had blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin.
i played with dolls that didn't look like me.
for my sixth birthday, my cousin got me a doll with tanned skin, and curly dark hair.
i can remember running around the house, showing the doll to everybody.
"look! look! nonno [grandfather] look! she looks like me! sorella [sister] she looks like me! you see her?"
i played with that doll for the next four years, and i brought it everywhere.
now, i'm really glad that mattel got its act together and realized that not everyone looks the same.
