My Steps

They say to walk with your shoulders back, head held high and eyes on the road ahead. Instead, I walk shoulders hunched, chin down, eyes firmly on my feet. If I do look up at the oncoming journey, into the future, I'm afraid that some tiny, insignificant stone will come along and trip me up. I don't make eye contact with anyone either. I'm scared that, if they can see into my eyes, they'll look at me for just a second too long, see a little too much; that they'll look at me, realise how unnecessary I am, and just push me over... and if I fall to the floor, I know I won't get up. So I just keep my hands in pockets and watch my steps along the paths.
