CHAPTER 7

We went through the same routine the next day. I was not really that into class, so I did not pay much attention to what was really going on and when. I just woke up each morning, looked at my schedule, and carried the books I needed to class. We did not have lockers in the classroom sections, since our dorms were so close to the classes. However, each student had a desk with a locker were they could stuff a few books, breakfast and lunch utensils.

After over two months later, not much had happened, just the same old boring school, gossip and every other crazy thing that happens in HS, with a few negligible exceptions. Of course, we were acquainted to most of the freshmen and others ahead of us by then.

Girls still kept drooling over Dean, and the rest of us gave up. We were not the cool girls after all, and besides, we still felt like kids. Jacky, Michelle, Katie and I kept fooling around like always. I started using the window more and more and completely abandoned using the classroom door. Childish…I know, but it was so cool, much better than getting into glaring contests with ‘Dean’s b*tches’.

I had soon forgotten about the hunk I locked eyes with on that first day I had a school tour. I had some times wondered who he was and what his name was, and if I would ever see him again, but well…I guess out of sight, really is out of mind.

Anyway, those little thirteen-year-old hormones were acting up, and so those little boys started to take note of my friends and me. I think all males are sick, how hard is it to understand “NO, NO, NO FRIGGING NO!!!!?” I mean, seriously, what is up with that? Oh yeah, I also got in a whole lot of trouble for all those mischievous things I was always up to. You know, silly things, like that use of the window as a door, at that one day I flipped off a guy that could not take no for an answer, and also that other time I flung myself onto yet another silly hormonal boy. Aaaaah, they were always so flipping annoying.

Along the way, say about three months since I started school, most of my friends started dating, which meant, less time with poor Nina, so I decided to join a prayer group. Yeah, I know, sounds lame, but when you find yourself in your bed after lunch, when the rest of the world is out there socializing or at club meetings (I didn’t want to attend because I was horrible at sports, ok, maybe not, but I just didn’t feel like showing off), you kind of stock up on your boring time.

It all started when this girl, two years my senior, walked into my room, oh yeah, our dorm was fully occupied by then, all forty beds taken, yes, she walked into my room when all my friends, even my most best friend Jackie, were nowhere in sight.

“Hi.” She said, timidly smiled at me.

I was stretched out on my bed with my hands on the back of my head, and feet dangling by the side of the bed, deep in thought. I looked up to see who was intruding on my sweet me time.

“Hi?” I replied, raising my eyebrow and head slightly.

“I’m Gloria, and I was wondering if you’d lend me five minutes of your time?” She said uncertainly.

“Sure,” I said, bouncing off my bed, to sit up right, and looked her directly in the eye with a ‘you have my attention, go on’ signal.

“So,” she started nervously, “have you heard about Jesus Christ?” she asked me, grimacing slightly, anticipating my reaction.

“Uh…yeah?” I answered, wondering where she was heading with this.

“I just wanted to let you know that He loves you, and He paid a ransom for you, when he chose to die on the cross.” She said, more confident this time.

My mouth was hanging slightly open, and, I am certainly sure, my face was a clear picture of ‘What the heck’ because she rushed to say, “I understand if you want me to leave, but thank you for your time.”

She was standing up to leave, and I quickly composed myself as I struggled to find my voice again. I honestly did not want to sit through her whole preaching session, but I did not have it in me to let her go, she seemed extremely nervous. Embarrassing her would haunt me for a very long time, so I hoped, and prayed, I would not regret the next words that flew out of my mouth.

“No stay.” I said a bit too loudly. “I mean, I would like to hear about…Jesus.” I said plastering my most innocent smile. I think it worked because she sat back down, all nervousness thrown out the window, and started preaching away. I would honestly be lying to you if I told you I grasped everything she was saying. I was struggling to keep my eyes open, and I guess after hours of trying to preach to me, she realized I was long gone, my eyes drooping ever so slightly each time she spoke. Ironically, she was much needed company, since none of my friends came back to the dorms, even by dinnertime.

I wondered what they were up to but brushed it off, and concentrated on Gloria, opposite me. We kicked off pretty well, and I was not surprised when I left my room to go have dinner with her. We laughed all through dinner, and ended up late for night preps. I did not go back to my room, but instead left with her, and sat with her during night preps, my friends long forgotten. Besides, they had abandoned me all afternoon. I had not seen them since then and all through prep, and it was already time to head back to the dorms.

When we entered the girls’ wing, instead of going left towards my room, I went left with Gloria. We leisurely enjoyed a few snacks together, lying on her bed, until my eyes started drooping. I must have dozed off, because the next thing I knew, Gloria was gently stirring me to wake up. I yawned exhaustedly, just before opening my eyes. Gloria was smiling down at me warmly, and I could not help returning her smile.

“Hey,” she whispered. “Sorry I woke you up, but I need to take you to bed, before lock down.”

I scrambled out of her bed, shocked that I was not in my own bed. I looked at my watch, and noticed it was almost midnight. I winced slightly, knowing very well, that everyone in my room was probably asleep, and the door was locked from inside. We hurried off toward my wing, and I was so relieved to find one of my roommates stepping out to go pee.

I beamed, and gave Gloria a tight hug, thanking her for making my day, and promising to see her again tomorrow. She wanted me to come with her for one of their prayer meetings during club hour. I agreed just before biding her goodnight. It was then, that I decided, maybe, just maybe, I should give her word a chance.

I slipped into my room, and noticed Jackie already asleep. I looked at her, sighed, and then quickly stripped out of my uniform, threw on my nightdress, and silently slipped into my warm inviting bed. I was fast asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
