"Mom, I'm scared." I said with my voice trembling.
"I know honey, everything will be okay."
"You don't know that, Mommy."
My mom shook her head slightly as she turned to walk away. "Hurry now Callie, or you'll be late."
I nodded as I walked into my room to see the pastel purple dress lying on my bed. I sighed as I stripped out of the baggy sweatpants and T-shirt I was wearing and slipped on the dress. I fell just above my knees. I stared at my reflection and wondered how I would feel at the end of today.
I started to put on a little bit of mascara and brushed my wavy hair.
In 2037, kids get a microchip put in their brains when they turn 16. This chip let's the child see when and where everybody they have met will die, except for themselves.
I'd see when and how my mom will die, my best friend Astrid, and my neighbor, Isaac.
I'm terrified.
I opened my bedroom door and walked into the kitchen to pour myself a glass of orange juice, my favorite.
I turned around to face to clock, 11:47 pm. At 12 o'clock I will have a chip in me. At 12 o'clock I will know how everybody I care about will die.
I went into the living room to find my mom sitting on my dads old chair, he died when I was 3 in a house fire.
"Mom?" I hesitated.
"Yes love?"
"Did you know how dad would die, before the fire?" I asked as my voice shook.
My mom looked down at her hands that were folded in her lap.
"I did.." She said as her voice trailed off.
"Oh.. Okay."
It was now 11:47. I went up to my mom and gave her a tight hug.
"I love you mom.."
"I love you sweetie. And happy birthday."
I finally stirred up enough courage to walk out of the living room and to the front door. My life was about to change, forever.
The doctors office where I'd be chipped was only about a 10 minute walk from my house.
I walked on the sidewalk without making any eye contact with any of the towns people.
As I stopped walking and stood still I looked up at the big sign. 'WELCOME TO MERCY WEST DOCTORS OFFICE : home to the microchip!"
While reading the words over and over I began to get dizzy. I checked my watch, 12:04.
Crap! I'm late!
I opened the double doors and was hit with a cool breeze.
I slowly made my way up to the front desk. Grabbed a clipboard and started filling out the papers.
There were so many strange questions I had to answer.
What was my mothers favorite food when she was my age? I don't know, the kind you eat?
What is my favorite time of the year? The time when I don't have to go to school?..
I filled out the rest of the questions with a bunch of random answers, most of which I made up.
I got back up and put the clipboard back on the desk.
"Somebody will be with you very shortly." The old shriveled up old lady behind the counter said.
"Thanks."
I waited maybe not even 7 minutes when a tall man with bright yellow hair opened the door to the back room and called my name.
"Ms. Grey?"
I stood up and made my way to the man. When I got closer I saw the mans name tag, Dr. Sclark.
I followed him down a long and twisty hallway leading to a room at the end.
"Hello..?" He started to say as he flipped through my pages to find my first name. "Callie."
"Hey."
"Now, are you ready to get chipped?" He asked me with such a perky smile.
No. Nope. Nada.
"Yeah sure."
I sat down on the chair that was covered in some kind of paper wrap.
I closed my eyes tightly.
"This might pinch a bit." Dr. Sclark said.
I felt a sharp pain go through the right side of my head. I flinched. It hurt. Really freakin bad.
"You're all done. Give it a few days and then you'll start to see the changes in your life. Have a good birthday." Dr. Sclark said.
"Thanks."
As I made my way out of the hallway and into the main lobby I noticed there was way more people there than went I first got here.
There was one person who stood out to me. I boy, tall, with crazy curly brown hair and freckles under his eyes and across his nose. He wasn't particularly attractive, but nor was he ugly. He was like the kinda cute you'd see in a puppy.
As I made my way across the lobby and through the doors I couldn't help but look back at him. There was something about him.
I started my journey back home. Scared of how the next couple of days will play out.
Happy birthday to me..
