Short Story
There was a loud crash as Jane destroyed his computer and overturned his desk. He was in a rage and by the time Lisbon got to his attic Jane was rocking back and forth in a corner, scraps of his map floating softly to the floor.
Approaching with caution she makes sure to avoid the scattered remains of RJ files and kneels in front of him.
"Jane?"
"I-I killed them it was- it was my fault."
She gets closer and for once Jane lets her hold him, wrapping his arms around her as if she was an anchor. Lisbon's a little surprised but then she wraps her arms around him and lets him cry it out.
"No. It wasn't. Who told you that anyway?"
"..."
"It was Red John wasn't it? Did he write a letter or...?"
"It was a video, I was mailed a CD."
"A video of what exactly?"
He holds her closer.
"Him killing my-my..."
The tears come back and all she can do it run her hand through his golden locks, trying to give him some sort of comfort.
"Haven't you ever wandered why he never killed you? Why he saved you from people who acted like him? It's because you bring back the nightmare. You make him look so big and powerful that sometimes I even get afraid."
He's finally calming down and she continues.
"You are the advertisement Jane, the world is watching you every time you freak out or turn into some dark version of yourself. He even said that he doesn't like to be slandered in public, he loves publicity he enjoys being noticed and that's what you do. You bring back the paranoia, the anxiety, the guilt,...everything."
"Then if I'm so special why give me the video?"
"Because you've changed, you're considerate of others and sometimes you seem genuinely happy. If this continues and you finally let the past go? Then he has nothing on you, so he's trying to make you have a meltdown to turn you back into his victim so that you'll continue this quest of revenge. Therefore, bringing back the nightmare."
He lets out a sigh.
"I never thought of it that way."
"No one ever does."
"Teresa?"
"Hm?"
"Thanks."
Lisbon laughs a little and gets up, holding her hand out to help him get up.
"Common mentalist we have a case to solve."
He takes her hand and lets her guide him out of his hell. Maybe one day, when this chaos is over he'll make it up to her. After all, there's a reason why she's his angel.
