"Wake up, sleepyhead." Sonya's quiet and calm voice is the first thing I hear as I wake up. I open my eyes to see her smiling down at me, while she's sitting on the side of my bed.
"Good morning." I whisper, the sleep not quite out of my voice. For a slight moment I believe that this is a continuation of my dream, that Sonya is mine and that I can hold her and kiss her. I forget where I am, forget about Trenton. I almost reach out to her, almost get lost in her eyes, but then my memories come flooding back, and I scold myself for being so stupid.
"Hurry up and get dressed. Trenton wants to head out to the field as soon as possible."
I start to sit up, my voice raspy, "What time is it?"
Sonya just stares at me blankly for a moment, as if she didn't understand what I said. Then, like she was snapped out of a trance, she starts to speak again, quickly as if nothing happened, "It's 7:30. He wanted to get up really early so that we could go." She chuckles, but her laugh sounds fake, sort of awkward and practiced. I went along with it.
"If we're gonna be getting up this early everyday, I don't know what I'm gonna do." She giggles, sincerely this time and it brings a smile to my face.
"Hurry up. He doesn't like to be kept waiting." She tries to suppress a smile as she gets up and starts to walk backwards towards the door.
"Yeah yeah. Just go." I say jokingly and she laughs as she closes the door and walks away.
Once I'm sure she's gone, I put my head in my hands and sigh loudly, frustrated by how much she affects me. I'm doomed.
I reluctantly get up and head over to my suitcase and grab my black strapless shirt, a pair of shorts, and my favorite jean jacket that I wear everyday. I throw them on and put on my choker, barely brushing out my hair and letting it fall down my back and onto my shoulders. I'm normally a mess, and this time is nothing different.
I walk out of my room and into the kitchen, where Sonya whistles at me.
"Wow, you look amazing today. Looks like you put a lot of effort into your outfit." she says sarcastically.
"I know, I really tried." I say.
"Morning slowpoke. You look like crap today." Trenton says to me as he walks in the kitchen.
"As always." I respond.
"So are you guys ready to see my killer swing? I bet I can hit a few baseballs over those hills in the field." he challenges and Sonya starts laughing. "What?"
"Okay, Babe Ruth. You can't even hit the ball past second base during games. I'm surprised the school even let you on the team." Sonya jokingly insults him. She knew full and well that his swing was serious. She'd experienced it firsthand after all. I can't wait until I get the chance to practice my swing on Trenton's face.
He rolled his eyes as he grabbed his stuff, "You're just jealous that you can't hit like I do." He speaks, getting really close to her face, and I notice Sonya slightly flinching as he glared at her, almost as if he were a father warning their child. It took all my willpower not to attack him right then and there. I just settled with sending discreet glares at him.
He starts for the front door as Sonya and I follow. I roll my eyes then look at Sonya, who does the same then starts walking, a blanket in her arms and a bag on her shoulder.
As Sonya and I reach the door (where Trenton has already walked out) she reaches her arm out for me, "M'lady." she says in a terrible British accent.
I giggle and hook my arm with hers as we follow doucheface down the street. We continue walking for a while, until we reach an old, partially rusted fence that covers a large dirt field in front of huge hills.
