Three years after McCaw's death
"Wait, you're telling me that I'm basically going on a suicide mission." Açaí spoke with a bored tone.
"Yep. Get in take the map get out, simple right?."
"No, not simple! I have to cross hundreds of thousands of miles to get their. Besides, why did you choose me. Of all the dragons here why me, what makes me a better choice than the rest." Açaí said, pestered by the dragonet.
"Açaí you know why, you are the greatest warrior we have. Our only chance of getting the map of the tunnels.
And before you ask we can't just look for the tunnels. The rainforest is gargantuan, and the chance of finding these tunnels is lower than you think.""Alright fine Kapok, I'll do it. But when I get back there better be a large mix of fruit when I get back."
"Yes ma'am." The little rainwing said determined. Within moments Açaí began collecting fruit for the flight to the island offshore.
"Wait, shouldn't we consult queen Glory about this". She questioned.
"No it's fine, Glory gave me the assignment to find someone for this job." Kapok answered nervously.
After a short and intense glare Açaí returned to picking fruit. After ten minutes she collected one hundred thirty two fruit. "That should be enough to last about a month, maybe a little longer if I'm conservative." After planning a flight path she returned to her hut to rest for the night. The scene played in her head over and over, his scream echoed. The memory that haunted her, just knowing he would've died either way. No way to save him. No way to change the past. The last words rang in her skull as if they were tangible, as the words played like a fading melody in her head she woke only to find Kapok bouncing impatiently.
"Kapok? What are you doing here so early?" Açaí said rubbing her eyes until she could see clearly.
"The queen said I could come along. Aren't you excited that I get to come with you." He said as his scales shifted to a mix of gold and pink.
"I guess so. Now I'll have somebody to speak to." The words croaked out of her mouth as she sipped the last few ounces of water in her canister and shook it to inspect if there was anymore water inside. "Well before we go you'll need to get yourself a canister and some fruit for the flight. Also, please no unnecessary questions. Okay."
"Okay, so I need a canister, food and to not ask any questions that might annoy you. Well I'll be ready in about twelve minutes or so. Kapok repeated as if he were marking it down to a list.
"Good let's meet at the river when you're ready to go."
About half an hour later Kapok finally arrived at the designated location, prepared for the travels ahead."Okay I've got everything I need." The young and still pink rainwing said panting.
"Alright then let's fill up our canisters and go. Açaí said rushing Kapok. After filling their canisters to the brim as they took of towards the deserted island hoping some structures remained. "Why did queen Glory send us to inspect instead of asking her personal nightwing guardian. It would've been a lot quicker to do that instead of sending us to go and search the entire volcano looking for a map that might be incinerated from the lava." She shouted over the wind howling in their ears.
"Why didn't you think of that before left."
"I don't know. Why did you tag along."
"Because you're like a sister to me and I want to protect you." He said embarrassed as his scales changed to crimson, to match his emotion.
"Really?"
"Yes." Kapok said feeling even more embarrassed.
"Wow, I never knew that you thought of me as family.
That explains so much. To why you look up to me to why you follow me around so much. Wow." She said as her scales colour shifted to match her surprised expression. There was a long and awkward silence between the two traveling rainwing as they flew perfectly parallel to each other. When it was broken by the still crimson dragonet as he shouted.
"Can we not make a big deal out of this, please. Just don't look to deeply into it. Kapok said sheepishly.
"Well I've been to focused on that fact that the sun will fall soon and you haven't asked to take a brake once yet, also why do you fell embarrassed about that. You act a lot like." Her words slowed as she remembered what happened to her long deceased friend.
"What?" Kapok yelled.
"Nothing Kapok, nothing. Hey we're about to cross the border between the icewings and the sandwings.
We should probably find a place to rest for the night.""Hey, how about that one over there."
"Heyyy, that's pretty good."
Shortly after passing the border she saw a nightwing who seemed depressed. Açaí saw a small reflection of herself in him, she saw the same sorrow and grief I'm him as she did herself. Within ten more minutes if flying they landed and noticed the trail of blood that lead towards the border.
"Do you think that it belongs to the nightwing we saw at the border." Kapok said as he shuddered at the thought of what could've happened.
"It seems to be maybe two days ago since the blood was there." Her teeth chattered from the breeze the came in from the large entrance.
"It's getting kinda chilly don't you think." He said as a chill ran through his entire body.
"We should huddle up near a corner." She said as they slowly walked to the corner near the left side of the cave.
After Kapok coiled up to take as little room as possible in the small corner of the cave Açaí laid a wing gently a top of the sleeping dragonet as she too drifted asleep.
