Chapter 21

(Amber P.O.V.)

I woke up and got dressed and did the usual morning routine before getting on the bus. Nate and I walked into school together only this time, Nate had his guitar. After a little while, I picked up his guitar and started playing the strings to "Hold onto you" from Kingdom Hearts.

"Remember, remember, please remember who I use to be. Who am I? Who am I? I'm a puppet in this game." It started out soft then got louder. "Remember, remember, please remember who I use to be. Who am I? Who am I? I'm a puppet in this game. Call us Heartless. Hallow vessels of what we use to be. Don't you forget about me, now commit this to your memory. Say that we're no bodys. Only shadows were meant to fade. I can't believe that it's true, you're a memory I can't loose, I'll hold onto you." I had barely noticed the group of people who had surrounded us and started clapping once I was done singing and playing. I set the guitar back down next to Nate and we were soon let upstairs to our lockers.

I went to my 6th period study hall, right after lunch. I wasn't sure where Nate had gone but he told me to meet him here. A few minutes after the bell, I realized why. I started hearing him play the tune to "Simple and Clean" also from Kingdom Hearts, in the hallway. I stood up and carefully walked out into the hallway and smiled when I saw him standing there, playing the guitar. Others started to fallow me.

"Please. Oh, Baby. Don't go. Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel, tonight. It's hard to let it go, Hold me. Whatever lies beyond this morning, is a little later on. Regardless of warnings, the future doesn't scare me at all. Nothing's like before." He sang, strumming the last note.

He walked over to me and hugged me, giving me a fake white rose as he did when he first asked me out. I took it and smiled.

"This can be our tradition." He smiled.

"If this is ours, then I love it." I said.

Later that night, after school, I called Emily.

"Hey, Mom."

"Hey, Kiddo." She said. "What's up?"

"Can Nate and I meet you somewhere so we can check on the baby?" I asked.

"Of course! Hey, you two inspired me to go back to working at the hospital in the baby department again. You guys can just meet me there. It's the one just down in town. There's only one, it's not exactly hard to find either."

"That's awesome!" I said. "And Connor's okay with all this?"

"Yeah. He, of course, needs me home at certain times and what-not. But he's less aggressive since he knows there's nothing he can really threaten me with. I mean, he gets a bit angry at times but it's fine. Nothing I can't handle."

"Okay. As long as everything's fine."

"Yeah it is. Sometimes I make him mad for my own amusement. I have ALMOST complete control over him now. I smile thinking about it sometimes." She laughed.

"Haha, well. Are you working now?"

"Yeah. So, you guys will meet me here tomorrow night after school, right?"

"Yep. How about some time around maybe 4:30 after school?"

"Yep! Sounds good. I gotta go. See ya later, Kiddo!" She said.

"Bye, Mom." I said. Dad opened my bedroom door as soon as I hit 'End Call' on my phone.

"That your mother?"

"Yep."

"I meant Toni."

"No. It was someone who is actually a mother and not just someone who pretends to be." I said, smiling at the end. He sighed.

"Fine. Anyways, dinner's ready. Toni will be home in about half an hour. Can we please just go one night without a fight?" I laughed.

"I'll try but I am NOT letting her treat me the way she does." He sighed again and shut my door. I quickly texted Nate before leaving.

"Hey, call me after dinner." He responded just as I put my hand on the handle of my door.

"Okay, I will. <3"

I left downstairs and ate the dinner my dad had prepared for me. I went upstairs just before Toni had come home. A few minutes later, Nate called me.

"Hey, Natearu."

"Hey, Amb. What did you wanna talk about?" He asked.

"Nothing really. Emily started working at the hospital with babies again."

"Oh cool! And Connor's okay with this?"

"He doesn't really have anything he can really use against her since I'm gone. Anyways, I made plans with her to meet her over at the hospital around 4:30 tomorrow after school. She told me where it is. I'll take us there tomorrow."

"But you can't drive?"

"Who said we were driving? It's getting warm out enough I can actually start taking my ways around the town. I know this town backwards and forwards."

"Not gonna lie, little terrified to see your way of getting around." He laughed.

"Shut up! It'll be fun, I promise."

"Whatever!" He laughed. "I'm sure I'll get hurt along the way." He joked.

"Not if you fallow the path correctly." I giggled. "You'll also get to meet Mrs. Faulk on the way, if we catch her in time."

"Who's Mrs. Faulk?"

"Well, back when I hadn't met you yet, I went off to explore new paths through the town and I met her along the way. I pass her house every time I go on that path. Every once in a while I just go down there to talk. She's a middle-school English teacher in another school in the next town over from us. She usually gets home around 4 after school."

"Nice! I have to go. I'll see ya tomorrow."

"Okay. Bye." I said.

"Bye." He said, and hung up the phone and I did the same.
