Beep Beep Beep

I let out a groan as I try to find the blaring alarm clock. After two missed attempts I finally shut it off. I slowly sit up and swing my legs over the side of my new bed. When I feel ready to touch my feet to the cold ground, I walk to the bathroom to get ready for school. Taking a shower, I let to warm water wash over me. Waking me up and making me feel less like a zombie. While in the shower I try to calm my ever growing nerves. What could have me a nervous wreck you ask? Two simple words that I have heard way to many times. New school. I really shouldn’t be this nervous over it right, I mean I’ve gone to six different schools in the past four years. I guess no matter how many times you do it you always get nervous the first day.

Reluctantly turning off the shower, I hop out and begin my morning routine. Clothes. Teeth. Hair. Makeup. My entire trip to the bathroom takes a whopping 30 minutes. Looking in the mirror I giggle to myself. With my ripped jeans, Metallica t-shirt, leather boots and jacket, not to mention my piercings, I look like the girl your parents warn you about. Then again your parents should warn you about me. I’ll be honest I’m a trouble magnet.

I shuffle my way into the kitchen, immediately walking to the fridge and grabbing some milk for my cereal. As I am getting my bowl, my foster mom Janice walks in.

“Hey Celeste, how are you this lovely morning?” Janice asks.

I mumble something like, “fine.”

This makes Janice Frown immediately, “Sweety, speak up. You know I don’t like mumbling.”

I sarcastically reply with, “sorry, didn’t realize I was mumbling.”

I hadn’t even realized I had been slapped until I tasted the blood in my mouth. Then all at once the sting of the slap filled me with pain. Janice grabs ahold of my shirt collar as she yells “Don’t ever talk back to me again, do you understand me?” Leaving some spittle behind on my face.

I takes all I have not to retaliate and hit back. I can’t hit back. I learned that lesson a long time ago. I’d have to move all over again. Probably to a place much worse. I only had to deal with this for one year, until I turned eighteen. Then I’d be able to leave and live my life how I want, maybe even track down who my real parents are.

“I said, do you understand me?” Janice hisses at me, yet again showering me with spit.

“Yes, Janice. I understand it won’t happen again” I say as I make sure to speak loud enough as to not be considered mumbling.

“Good, it better not.” She says as she releases my collar.

To avoid any more tension, I quickly finish my cereal and grab my almost empty backpack.

“Bye, gotta go before I miss the bus.”

Janice just grunts in reply.

The bus ride to school was a mixture of noise, flying objects, and worst of all eyes. I mean I’ve had to deal with people staring at me a lot, but this kind of staring was different. Instead of the normal curious stares, I got hostility. Not just “I don’t like your look hostility”, but “You killed my puppy” hostility.

Once the tension filled bus ride was over, I found myself at a big gray building. Today is going to be fun. Note the sarcasm.

Walking to the drab building felt like I was a criminal walking into prison. Taking my time to walk up the stone steps and open the big double doors. First thing I noticed when I walked into my new prison, everyone looked like a poster child for what parents want in a kid. Seriously, do all of these kids let their parents pick out their clothing or do they like dressing like their grandparents? Ignoring the visual probing, I headed in the direction where the office was, preparing myself for a day full of boredom.
