Chapter 1

The plaster on each of the four walls was crisping to nothing, exposing naked cement. The faces around me were weary. This run-down cafe was known for its shady customers who all looked the same: just downright shady.

April's elbow crashed into mine with a clack. My eyes locked on him. The tips of his teeth were sharpened well. After making an assumption, the bodies haunting my mind confirmed my theory. I fell back into memory, remembering distinctly the rips in the women's pale necks. The townspeople and media started to call this anonymous killer the "Vampire" because of the "bites". The suspicion would end tonight, and the "Vampire" would come to an end.

April and I didn't talk in words but in motions in these situations. Eye and limb movements were my two languages, and I spoke them fluently. A few words fell from her eyes, and I turned back to him. We need to get him out of public.

She read my response as I stood, scraping my chair against the ground. My wooden friend brushed against my palm in assurance.

"Hello." The words slipped from my lips like water. His small blue eyes pierced through mine, and at that moment, I was chosen as his next victim.

"Hello," he replied. His voice was husky and dry, as if he hadn't used it for a while. He cleared his throat while his eyeballs were fixed on me, studying me. Slowly but casually, I took the seat across from him. "Are you from around here?"

"Yes I am, actually." As I spoke, he didn’t even try to hide his staring. My neck seemed to be the main attraction in the room for this thirsty creature. I didn't attempt to push his staring away and instead pushed my hair back from my neck and behind my ear primly. His small eyes widened to an extent I believed was impossible a few seconds ago."You know," I breathed, melting in my seat, watching him shrug off his faded brown jacket. "I've been told I've an attractive neck ." My voice came out throaty, just the way intended, and I craned my neck back, offering him a better view. The way that he didn't try hiding the staring was extremely blunt, which seemed pretty inexperienced to me, but no creature of the night would leap on a victim in public. That didn't take too much knowledge to know.

He leaned in, smirking, expecting a satisfying drink. He ran a hand through his tousled hair and let out a soft moan. He was somewhat attractive in three ways: bluntness, eyes, and body. But he was gullible.

"Tell me about yourself."

"There's not much to know." He seemed surprised but at the same time grateful that I wasn't too complicated and more willing to lean towards the alternative. I proved to be easy prey. I decided I needed to get this over with already before something unearthly happened. "I like short talks and long action." The blush became apparent on his cheeks above his curved lips. He needed me now.

After a quick motion, I was standing and so was he. His blue eyes were searching me, pondering my next move. From my periphery, I saw April tense. I mentally pushed her aside. She would always get nervous over every time I led a supernatural creature out of public. She needed to understand that this was my part—not hers.

When I reached him, I didn't hesitate to feel his hand under mine. My heart lurched, and I felt my breath catch in the back of my throat. Concentrate. He gripped my hand tightly, giving me a dirty look. After our gaze of lust reached its end, he tugged on my fingers, leading me to the back door. Usually at this time of the procedure my nerves were in a bundle, because there always was a chance of failure.

The chilly night threw some winds onto my bare arms which were being rubbed. It seemed he wanted to seduce me before finishing me off. He let out a breath which was apparently chilly, and without further ado pushed me onto the wall, but I wasn't one for playing along.
