Chapter 5
Darkness surrounded us, plunging the ballroom in fear. I didn’t join in with the gasps and shouts in the room. For a second, all was silent around me, a sense of thick tension poured through the room.
I chastised myself for not realizing there was going to be a twist to this evening. Why didn’t I suspect it?
“Jo?” Brent whispered, and a hand found mine.
A female scream split the silence in half, and it echoed throughout the room, bouncing off all walls, not failing to reach every single pair of ears. Not too long after, another scream resounded before being muffled.
I didn’t move, but from the sound of it, everyone else did. Clacks and clatters of heels and shoes. Another scream after another.
I stood straight, facing the darkness with confidence. It took a squeeze of a hand to remind me Brent was still here too.
“Don’t worry.” Brent’s words didn’t find me easily, but I still caught them.
“I’m not worrying,” I snapped back. Why had I snapped at him? Then my body gave up, allowing all natural feelings to soak in my skin. In response to the situation, I held Brent’s hand tightly, secretly not wanting to let go.
I was nervous. I mean, who wouldn’t be?
Seconds passed by. The screams started to die off. I started to wonder if I’d been left alone here with Brent. There were still people around me, and I felt them. I could hear their breaths.
Slowly, the Assembly monitors, I presumed, were snatching every SH clean from the marble floor, and to God-knows-where.
I let go of Brent’s hand.
Shortly after this, an expected pair of hands touched my body—one on my back, and the other clasping my mouth shut. A series of possible scenarios flew through my head as I was being dragged farther down the massive space.
It took pounds of control to stop unconsciously resisting from the clutch of the monitor from behind me. At last, my body relaxed, and I was dead weight to the monitor. Obviously, my reaction was unexpected, and for a moment, the hands had to quickly replace themselves elsewhere to get a good grip on me.
I continued to chant calming words in my mind as I was taken to what seemed like a room.
The hands released me and pushed me onto a chair roughly and a screeching noise followed. Then the slamming of a door.
I hadn’t felt it, but I was chained by the wrist by the silver bracelet I was given earlier. A silver binding of the wrist assured me I wasn’t going anywhere. Curiously, I squinted my eyes and took a look around, my eyes taking in nothing but darkness.
How big was this room?
As I stared off into the blackness, a screeching white light blinded me, and I hissed back, shutting my eyes, but only for a second. My eyes flapped open, and in front of me was a stage of some sort. And I got front seat.
Music began to play, and not the pleasant kind. Eerie carnival music chimed in ridiculously high-pitched notes that hurt my ears. From a dark corner of the room, a figure flopped onto the stage, cocking its head at me.
I sucked in a breath, but showed no emotion.
The clown was dressed in cheap uniform, red and black being the two main colors to him. The clown waved a gloved hand to me ominously, then as quickly as it came, it fell into dust. My eyes widened as the dust began to rise, forming a much taller and poised form.
