Music is a very powerful thing. It can make you feel specific emotions like happiness, sorrow, fear, and many more. Some people hold the gift of song, being able to sing and enchant others with their voice. Yeah, right. That worked out great for my sister. It freaks me out to write this, honestly it does. But people have to know. Maybe together we can bring down this freak and turn him in to the police or something. I don't know how it works, but maybe it'll make me feel better to write it and let others see it. Who knows. I'll tell you at the end how I feel about this.
Okay. So it all started one day when my sister, Sophie and I were walking down the street from school. I had a pretty bad day, mostly cause some jerk at school was picking on my friend. Anyways, as we were walking, we heard this voice from around the corner. It was beautiful...almost enchanting. My sister was standing there, almost in a trance by this mystery voice.
"We have to check it out." She smiled down at me.
"Do we have to? Or do you just want to?" I complained. Since she was the older sister and I was the younger one, she mostly got her way. So when she ignored me and started walking towards the voice, I wasn't surprised. I rolled my eyes and followed her, trying hard to keep up. As we got closer to the voice, we saw a huge crowd of people surrounding whoever was singing. I could at least tell from the deep and rich voice that it was a boy. This guy was gifted, don't get me wrong. The voice almost toke my breath away. But it affected my sister more. She pushed her way through the crowd to get closer to the singer. I apologized to the people she shoved as I followed her to the front of the crowd.
"Sophie was it really...?" I didn't bother finishing as I looked up at her. She looked like she was in s complete trance as she listened and stared at the performer. I frowned and turned to look at the guy. He was tall, with navy blue dyed hair, faded out jeans, a white buttoned up shirt, and a navy blue scarf to go with his hair. He wore half a mask with navy blue roses on it, too. The first thought that came to me was 'at least he chose a good color to theme his outfit in.' The the second thought was 'why a mask?'. Maybe it was to add to the way he preformed. Or maybe he had something to hide. All I know was, it was kinda freaky. But kinda cool at the same time. How naïve I was. What really stood out was his eyes. They were a beautiful shade of green. A shade of green that didn't even look humanly possible. The shone as he sang a song about how the mind can become corrupted with insanity easily. I wrinkled my nose at the sad lyrics, and toke another look at my bewitched sister. She stared, completely awestruck by this stranger's singing.
"He isn't that great, you know." As soon as I finished my sentence, she covered my mouth with her hand, not bothering to spare me a single glance.
When the song was over, she pulled her hand away from my mouth and walked up to the performer rather bravely and started talking to him. I thought that was pretty odd since she's usually on the shy side, but I guess if a guy's cute enough she'll go for it. Something seemed...off with him. The way he smiled, or more like smirked, and the glint in his eyes. It was almost on the side of...insanity. But I quickly shook it off. Maybe my judgement is off from my sucky day at school. I watched as Sophie waved goodbye to the singer, and walked back over to me.
"So? Was he as amazing as you thought?" I rolled my eyes playfully.
"His name is Xavier..." She said dreamily, her eyes gazing off into the distance. "He says music is his passion. He wants to spread his madness." She laughed a little. I frowned. "Uh...madness? That sounds kinda weird." She gasped at me.
"Weird?! It is not!" She flipped her golden locks at me, and started walking. I sighed heavily and followed her home.
It only got worse from there. We saw that freaky street performer more and more each day. Every time Sophie so much as heard his voice she would run in his direction and drool over him as he sang. Each time he sang, his songs got more and more creepy.
The second time we heard him sing, it was about heart break. For the rest of that day and the following week, Sophie seemed to behave strangely, like talking back to our parents, getting direction, she even punched a kid in the cheek for being rude to her. Since she was the role model for me and generally the star of the family, it broke mom's heart to see her this way. When asked why she was behaving like this, Sophie would only answer with a shrug or a "you wouldn't understand".
The next week, as we were walking down the street, we heard him again. This time the theme of the song was death. This should have set off a red flag, but his songs were all about depressing stuff, so I just ignored it. It's the one thing I regret more than anything. Maybe if I tried to do something--anything--then my dear older sister might still be alive. We stood with the rest of the crowd, listening to Xavier sing his death filled song until the very end. When it did end, Sophie was crying. She sobbed as Xavier stared. I could have sworn I saw him smirk before walking away, looking pleased.
That night, I had the strangest dream. I was in the street at night, walking by myself. My head was down as I stared at the ground. No one was around. I was completely alone. Until I heard someone speak. "Jasmine?" I looked up at the sound of my name. It was him. Xavier. The demon street performer who I blamed all of Sophie's off actions for. The monster in the flower mask. "What do you want?" I glared at him. He chuckled and shook his head at me. "You never understood. Only a few can see the beauty in my music. You are not one of them." He reached into his pants pocket and toke out a gun decorated with navy blue roses. I tensed and got ready to run as he aimed it at me. "I don't usually directly kill...but you seem to really irritate me." He snarled at me and put his finger on the trigger. I closed my eyes, but nothing came. A cruel laugh broke out. I opened my eyes to see Xavier tilting his head back in laughter. Out from the corner of my eye I saw something fall from the roof of a building. I looked up at what is was, only to gasp in horror. It was my sister. I screamed as she fell, moving closer to the ground. I tried to move, but I couldn't. It was like I was glued in place. I stared wide eyed as it seemed like Sophie fell for ages, Xavier's laughter in the background. Then she made contact with the concrete. Her blood splattered on the pavement. She laid lifelessly on the road. Hot tears started rolling down my cheeks.
"She understood..." He chuckled, then it slowly turned into a laugh. I continued to stare at my now dead sister. Xavier rolled up his sleeve, and with his nail he scratched a tally mark into his arm. "That makes seven..." He glared back at me, focusing the gun on me once more. "Madness has taken over me. Has it to you?" Then the loud bang of a gun went off.
The next morning Sophie wasn't in her room. We discovered by police that she fell from the roof of an office building. Grief toke over me and I cried for what felt like hours. I loved my sister. We were so close.... I blamed Xavier. He did this to her. Some way, somehow, he did something to her. He corrupted her mind and made her kill herself. I guess in a way, he corrupted my mind too. I did have that nightmare after all. He even shot me in my dream. Yet I'm still here to tell the tale. Maybe if I saw his whole face, I could help out some more. I never saw him again after her death, but I have been seeing other news reports about suicides going up in my area. I suspect that that damn street performer is the cause of it. I don't know how, I just know he is. I don't want this happening to anyone else. Please...if you see someone like this take him down.
If you can fight against his voice....
And no. Telling you this doesn't make me feel better.
