                   Chapter 1

"Night Ma, night Pa." I kissed my parents softly and went up to my bedroom. I jumped on to my bed and wondered of what my birthday would be like. Normally, Ma and Pa would invite a few of their friends over for a spot of tea and cake and be done with it. Maybe it might be better this year. I switched of my bedside light and fell into a deep sleep.

*Next Day*

I woke up to a horrible pain all over. My shoulder blades felt knives had cut through them and my whole body was limp and sore. I heard a soft tap at my door and a voice call "Time to get up Everlyn." In pain, I slowly got out of bed and crept down the stairs. My Ma and Pa were sitting at the kitchen table. Ma was drinking tea and Pa was reading the paper. His eyebrow quivered when he saw me.

"Happy Birthday," he said stiffly. Ma left the table, looking quite distraught, and brought back a box wrapped in silver paper. She handed it to me and I opened it. Inside was a bracelet covered in amber coloured beads. A large bead was tied to the middle and a red flower was on it.

"Thank you," I whispered. Carefully, I put it on and looked at my wrist. It was quite pretty. Ma smiled and glided out of the kitchen. I then walked out after her to avoid the horrible glares from my father. Together, Ma and I went out into garden. We sat down on the swing chair and Ma looked at me.

"Everlyn, there's something I need to tell you. I have wanted to tell you for a long time but I couldn't because I knew you wouldn't understand. I think now is the right time. You're a -"

"I think that's enough now." Pa had come out and was looking very angry. He dragged us inside and a few of his friends were sitting at the table for the stupid tea party.I will just have to wait to find out what my mum wanted to tell me.
