My first time uploading on here, still a little skeptical whether people will actually read this or not. I wrote this about two years ago in my creative writing class. If people do end up liking some of my old writing, I'll probably start posting some of my recent stories up here. :) Hope you all enjoy!

The sun was pounding heavily unto my face as the gunshots exploded in my ears. I could taste the fear linger in my soul as I refused to welcome in death. Just ten hours ago, I had my whole life in my hands as I watched my fiancé’s words flow across the paper and into my mind, my heart. I could just hear that beautiful voice ring into my heart and awaken my soul, removing every sense of death and fear from my body, as I read each word in the letter.

My dearest Anthony,” her beautiful voice ringed on, “I have never let go of our promises together. Our house in the meadow, with the river nearby, and our Lillian, frolicking in the grass. I cannot wait for the day of your return. The eight months you promised me is nothing compared to the day when I can finally hold you in my arms again.”

The striking melody singing in my head was distracted by the dreadful screams of agony that brought my senses back to reality. I let my dreary eyes take in the battlefield. Clouds of smoke and ashes suffocated my lungs and brought tears to my eyes. Those tears were stimulated by the irritation of the ashes scratching against my irises, as it mourned for the dead bodies violently scattered around me. All around me were fresh corpses waiting for me to join them. For the past four months, I had to live through this. How much more of this pain and torture will I have to endure, to finally see freedom once again?

“My life is nothing without you,” a lonely tear ran down my cheek. “I can’t wait for that day, two months from now where I can jump into your arms and finally say ‘I do in front of all our loved ones. That day when you can slide the ring upon my finger, our promise. The day when our forever can finally begin.

I ran toward the trenches, every inch of my body fought for the hope of seeing her again. I have to fight for her, I’d rather die in her arms, than on this horrid battlefield.

“There is nothing left for me to do. Six months has passed and there’s just two more months for me to endure. Our Lillian looks more like you as each day passes by. Her eyes reflect yours, as I see her love for me grows each day.”

Her voice echoed over the commands screaming at me. They told me to work the machine guns, and I hurried on over to them. I picked one of them up, anticipation flowing through my bloodstream. My pointer finger was locked on the trigger, and I felt no need in releasing it. I felt like a mad man, shooting every breath that screamed out “enemy” to me. It was a good thing my love wasn’t here to see me like this.

“I miss you more and more, every second just makes me long for you.

Reality struck my senses back onto the battlefield. The gun dropped out of my hands as I was in shock. I felt a quick pierce through my heart, as trickles of blood tickled my sides. My companions’ echoes were all I could hear.

            “NO!”

            “NO!”

            “NO!”

            “Somebody help him!”

            “Somebody do something! He’s down!”

Immediately I reached into my back pocket, clutching on to the letter. I held on to dear life. I could hear the thud as my body hit against the ground.

“If I could, I would spend my whole life waiting for you.” I heard as the vision of her face struck my heart into life, just for a moment.

            “You’re my everything.

The frantic screaming, the hands shaking my body, and the constant sobs seemed far away from me now. It was as if I was disconnected from all that was around me. No! I fought to keep my heart beating, but I was scared I couldn’t last any longer.

            “Your dearest Katherine,”

No, I can’t let this happen. I can’t leave her like this.

The beating of my heart slowed down. Ba-bump. Ba-bump. Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

            “I love you Anthony

My eyes closed, escaping every light. My eyes closed, welcoming in the darkness.

            Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

            “always and forever.
