The ground was crunchy under my feet from the moisture that had frozen overnight. I sat in the drivers seat of the car and did what I had been taught. With my right hand I checked to make sure the transmission was in neutral, and then slid down the seat so my feet reached the brake pedal down. I put the keys in the ignition, turned my wrist, and the car came to life. When I walked back to the house I held my breath so I didn't inhale the smokey exhaust coming out of the tailpipe.
My Mom was standing with my in the front hallway and said, "Take care you two, and drive slow, it's going to be icy."
"We'll be safe." My dad told her. "I just need about keeping up with Nick."
It made me smile to hear him say this, but I didn't know if he was serious. How can my dad be worried about keeping up with me, I thought, he's the best skier I know. He had even gone down "Sudan Couloir" the scariest run on earth.
"But Dad," I interrupted, "we aren't going to do any double-black-diamonds right."
"You don't have to do anything you don't want to do." My mom said, but it was an easy thing to say standing in our house. Sometimes on the side of the hill it felt like you were going to die.
"Promise dad?"
"Remember the things you learned last year," he answered, "You'll be fine."
"Ok."
"Did you get the car started?" My dad asked.
"Yup."
My mom bent down. "Give me one more kiss."
"We will call if there's any problems." said my dad.
"Have fun and be careful." My mum repeated and squeezed my shoulder.
My parents kissed on the lips, and I followed my dad out the door. We got in and buckled our seat belts. The icy ground made a crunching sound like gravel as drove away. My mom stood in the front hall window and I waved to her. I couldn't remember the exact amount of time it took to get to the mountain so I settled into my seat and watched the world sleep.
