“Daddy, daddy another!” I squealed with joy.

“Okay kiddo”

I picked the card as instructed and placed the card back in the middle of the deck after glancing at it. The card was my favorite; a Queen of Hearts. He tapped the top of the deck three times and showed me the card that was mine.

“Is this your card, Gracie?”, my father spoke calling me by the altered version of my middle name as per usual. His smirk showed that he knew it was my card and I squealed in delight anyways. It was my second favorite trick my father by life, magician via occupation performed.

My favorite was his Disappearing Act. He would close his show by disappearing. Then my mother, as his assistant The Lovely Lady Iris would tell the crowd that they could buy tricks in the back of the two parted building. I would run back to meet my father backstage and congratulate him on amazing the crowd. We would walk through the hall hand and hand and I would watch as he showed little children around my age how to perform astonishing tricks.

I was an eager child, still am to this day. One night my curiosity got the best of me and the eagerness tagged along. The routine was nearing an end but, still was in full swing of crazy. The swirling of lights and the fog machine that added confusion and magic to the show clouded the room. The noises and sound effects roared in the room. The shows felt like how I imagined the circus at night. Wild and crowded with lights blazing around consecutively and the shrills of people having fun and enjoying their time with their families.

I knew this moment all too well. It was time for The Disappearing Act. I waited patiently two steps to the left of where I would meet The Maleficent Magician after every show. “For my final act, the grand finale, my last trick of the night, I will be saying farewell and have a magical night!” his smooth deep voice said with suave. With a flash of light and a puff of smoke he was invisible from the stage and appeared before me behind the closed back curtain.

“Gracie! What are you doing back here so early?” he inquired.

“To see you.”, my voice was smaller than the small voice of a six year old.

“I know dear, but you can’t be back here until I disappear.”

“Oh, okay. I understand”

“Come on lets go say good night to everyone.” , and with that he led me to the Magic Store in the back of the room.
