Chapter 16

Later that day after I got home, I was lying on my bed with my Calculus book in front of me when there was a knock on my door.

“Come in,” I said without looking up from my book.

“Hey,” I heard Kole say.

My head snapped up when he spoke.  “Hi,” I said, sitting up and closing my book.  I moved back against my pillows as he sat down on the edge of my bed without looking at me.

A few moments passed before he sighed and looked up.

“Listen, Reece,” he said.  “I’m…I’m sorry for the way I acted yesterday.  I shouldn’t have said those things to you when I really don’t know what’s going on.  I guess…it was just a shock to see you and Kane.  I…”

“I’m sorry,” I said, moving toward him and grabbing his hand.  “You shouldn’t have found out like that and I feel really bad for it.”  I swallowed back my tears.  “But I love him, Kole.  You’ve got to see that.”

He nodded, looking at me, and squeezed my hand.  “I hate to say it but I do,” he said.

“Why do you hate it?”

He sighed and ran his other hand through his hair.  “It’s just weird to think that my little sister and best friend are together,” he said.  “And I don’t know why I hadn’t noticed it, now and before he went away for school.”

“No one knew before he went to college,” I said.  “I didn’t tell Mom until a few weeks after we broke up.  She apparently told Dad.  And Mia and Greer didn’t find out until a few weeks ago.  Well, Mia knew about the first time and why we broke up.  And Greer found out after he saw me and Kane making out in the car.”

Kole groaned and covered his ears as I started laughing.

“Ugh, don’t tell me the gross details,” he said with a shudder.

“But he’s such a good kisser and he’s great at…”

He slapped his hand over my mouth.  I started laughing.

“I said don’t give me any details,” he said sternly.

He started to take his hand off my mouth.

“But he makes…” I started.  He put his hand back over my mouth.

“Don’t,” he said.

I laughed when he pulled back again.  “I was going to say good breakfast,” I said.

He looked at me and we both laughed.  I leaned toward him and wrapped him in a hug.

“I love you, Kole,” I said.  “Thanks.”

“Love you, too, Reecey,” he said, hugging me back.  “But if he hurts you, be sure I’m going to kick his ass.”

I laughed and kissed him on the cheek.  “Oh, I’ll have that done way before you do,” I said.

I was still smiling when we walked out of my room and toward the stairs a few minutes later.  “So how’s my little niece doing?” I asked.

Kole laughed.  “She’s kicking away still,” he said.  He seemed like he was seeing something far away.

“You’re happy it’s a girl, aren’t you?” I asked.

He nodded, looking over at me.  “Yeah, I am,” he said.  “I hope she looks just like Mia.”

“Yeah, hopefully she doesn’t look like you,” I said, laughing.

He rolled his eyes.  “Ha ha, very funny,” he said.

I was still laughing when we got to the bottom of the stairs and walked into the living room.  To my surprise, everyone was there, including Kane and Pax.  They all looked at me and Kole when we walked in.

“So are you guys good now?” Dad asked.  “Talk everything through?”

I nodded as my eyes locked with Kane’s.  “Yeah, we’re good,” I said.

Kane cleared his throat and stood up to walk toward me and Kole.  “I’m sorry about what happened yesterday,” he said to Kole.  “I shouldn’t have done that to you.”

Kole shook his head.  “I’m actually kind of glad you did.  It made me start thinking again before I said stuff,” he said.

Kane stuck out his hand for him to shake and they did that weird man hug thing that all guys do.

“It’s okay,” Kane said.  “We’re good now.”

After dinner, Kane and I went out on the back porch and sat on the porch swing.  I lay down with my head in his lap, eyes closed, as he slowly rocked us back and forth.

“Are you okay?” Kane asked as he ran his fingers through my hair.

“What do you mean?” I asked, looking up at him.

“Your family knows now,” he said.  “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I am,” I said, reaching up to grab one of his hands and brought it to my lips to kiss his palm.  “I’m just glad they know now.  I don’t like having to keep this from them.”

He chuckled and leaned down to kiss my forehead.  “It was kind of weird but your dad said that he was happy,” he said.

“Really?” I asked, laughing.

He smiled, nodding.  “Yeah.  He said I was better than all of the guys that you’ve introduced them to, even if I was your teacher.”

“Well, I guess that’s good,” I said, still laughing.  “But then again, my dad’s always liked you.”

“I just didn’t know how he much he would like me to be with you while I’m still your teacher,” he said.

Both of us laughed but then his abruptly ended.  I looked up at him to see him starting off into the woods behind our house.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, confused, as I sat up and looked in the direction he did.

It took him a few moments to respond.  “Nothing,” he said.  “Just thought I saw something.”

“Oh,” I said, looking back out.  I couldn’t see anything out in the trees.
