FOUR
Carrie has had a crush on Ray since grade ten. They had been dating off and on for an entire grade. Time after time Ray would cheat on her. Yet, time after time, she would take him back again. I would get so mad at her for forgiving him. At best, I think they should just stay as friends as they were before grade ten, and in between their relationships.
My thoughts quickly turned into actions. I gave Carrie the same disappointed look as her mom was giving her. Her mom had felt the same way I did. She has never liked Ray as Carrie’s boyfriend. Carrie watched both mine, and her mom’s, expressions change into an angry stare. Without a word to her, I just stood up, and walked out of her house.
I felt so alone, sitting mute on my couch by the window. Normally around this time, I would be swimming with Carrie or at the park with Carrie. I felt as if she had betrayed me, as if she would rather be with Ray then with me. I needed somebody to be with, and soon. I would fall apart without Carrie. I had many other friends to fall back on, but no one was as sweet and caring as she had been to me. Nobody could match her. Something inside my mind switched my thoughts to Cam. As if there was one of those little switches you find on train tracks built into my brain. The switch activated again, when I saw a bush rattle and shake. There was absolutely no breeze left, so either someone or something was in that bush. I leaned further over my window and very slowly and tensely cracked open the window. I slipped a glass bottle I found on top of my desk out through the open window. After my little episode with Cam, I wasn’t going to go anywhere un-prepared. I urged my slender body out of the window, my eyes fastened to the rustling bush. This creature sucked at being stealthy. I butt slid sideways down the side of my roof, slowly but steadily, and hoped I would be quiet enough to be un-noticed. I snatched up the glass bottle I had slid out before, and gripped it tightly in my hand. I slid of the side of my roof, into a heaping pile of freshly cut grass that had been raked off the lawn from the mowing today. I stayed in the pile for a few seconds. Still hearing the rustling, I waited longer. The rustling stopped. I made sure I was ready to attack anything that could be there, I was not light on taking chances since yesterday. I took a deep gulp of oxygen into my lungs and sprang out from the grass pile. A bellowing scream beamed out of my mouth. Standing in my face was Cam.
Surprised, I flung the bottle around violently at his head. I swung one last time and the bottle smacked right into the side of his forehead. The sound of shattering glass and ripping skin caused me to whip the remains of the glass bottle into the bushes. An immense cry of pain shot out of Cams gritted teeth. He fell over backwards, gripping his head with his hands. As for my hands, they covered my mouth, blocking my constant cursing. I ran like the wind back into the house. As I looked back, I watched him yank his shaking hands off his throbbing head, revealing an ugly, bloody mess of glass and tattered skin. I ran up the stairs two at a time. By the time I was at the door of the up-stairs bathroom, Cam was there. ‘How the heck did he get up here’ He splashed cold water onto the wound. I ran into my room and locked my door. I added the question that I had thought before. How did he get into the house? "Why were you on my property?" I shouted through my wooden door. "I came here to see you." Cam’s voice sounded sincere and innocent. "Oh, did you come here to try to kill me again?" I yelled back. This time he was silent. In a matter of seconds, my door was flat on the ground. He had kicked it down. "We need to leave here. They have already found you." I backed into the furthest corner from him. "Who?" I asked nervously. "Them."
I added to my diary right then; Who was Cam talking about when he said they had found me? How did he kick down the door? to my list of annoying un-answered questions that clung to my mind. I stuffed the pocket-sized book into my pocket. "We need to go." "I’m not going anywhere with you." "Sorry, I never heard myself say that you had a choice."
Cam sent me a signal towards the door and in the next minute, we were both downstairs. I slid my feet into my new flip-flops and opened the door. Standing directly in the way of my path, was a police officer.
