The Red Bowl

"So, did you see the two new kids yesterday?" Hadley asks while gazing up at the stars.
"Like I couldn't." I say as I reach for another handful of popcorn and pass the bowl to Hadley.
"Yes, they're different. But that one at lunch, was totally checking you out." She winks at me, I throw some popcorn at her and she catches some in her mouth.
"Well, I'm going to refill the bowl." I say as I walk back to the house before she realizes that I'm blushing.

"Hey kiddo, need more popcorn?" my brother asks as soon as I shut the patio door.
"Uh, yeah. And I'm a little thirsty, Hadley probably is too. Do you have any-" I didn't have time to finish because he knew what I was going to say before I even said it.
"Lemonade?" he asks, then grins and holds out two plastic cups. I nod and smile. He fills them up with ice and pours the lemonade into them.
"So how was school? Anything interesting?" He hands me the the two cups and I put them both beside me and lean against the counter. I start to stare at the floor.
"Nothing really. Except that we got two new boys." He nods. Then he puts the popcorn dish in the dishwasher and gets out a smaller one. Kendall fills up the smaller bowl and puts it in front of me. I stare at it for a moment. That bowl looks so familiar.
"Oh, that's the red bowl mom made before the-" I start to say slowly and decide it's not a topic Kendall nor I want to talk about, so I just shut my mouth.
"Yeah. Well, you better get back outside. Hadley will start to wonder where you are." I nod silently then I pick up the two glasses and walk towards the door.
"Oh, Saffron," Kendall calls from the kitchen, "You forgot your popcorn." I walk back to him and slide a cup underneath my arm. Then he hands me the red bowl. "Thanks." is all I said.

"Took you awhile!" Hadley was leaning up against the stairs and she smiled at me as I sit down next to her.
"Yeah, Kendall wanted to know about my day." I tell with a sigh and I hand her the popcorn bowl. She takes it.
"And, what did you tell him?" Hadley asks while putting the popcorn bowl down and she reaches for her lemonade then I reach over and grab mine from behind me.
"Oh, I just told him how we got two new guys and that the rest of the day was boring." I answered with a shrug while putting my glass down beside my foot after taking a sip. The night was one of those winter nights when it's not too cold but cold enough to shiver when the wind comes. I glance down at the thin layer of snow coating the grass. I look to my left and Hadley is gone. She must have went to the restroom or something. I take my glass of lemonade and put it in my cold hands. I stare at the snow as I start to drink.
"I should be drinking hot chocolate, not cold lemonade, I guess I'm just weird that way." I think to myself. When I drink something cold it feels warm to me and when I drink something warm it feels like my tongue is frozen. I hold my glass out in front of me then I start to tilt it over onto the snow. Right when it comes out of my glass, it freezes. I suddenly feel my eyes widen. I stare at the yellow colored ice sprouting out of my glass. I hear the patio door open and I gasp as I shake my glass. The ice turns into white snow, then falls to the ground. I turn around to see Kendall looking at me while he had a mug of steaming coffee in his hands. He's wearing a gray long sleeved sweater with dark jeans and black boots. Kendall smiles down at me then takes a sip of his coffee. I shake my head and smile.
"Are you enjoying that, gross tasting stuff?" I ask while he walks over to me and sits down beside me. He holds his mug out to me.
"Yes I am," Kendall laughs, "Would you like some?" I lightly shake my head no and he grins.
"So how was your date?" I ask to break the silence. He was staring down at his coffee and looks up as soon as I say "date".
"Oh. She was, um," Kendall pauses for a moment, "Not my type." He shrugs and places his coffee mug on the grass then puts his face in his hands, "Like every other girl on this planet." You would not believe how many dates Kendall has went on and every time he comes home after one he makes up an excuse like "She's not my type", when really he means she said he's not her type, or this one time she didn't show up and he said "Well, she must have decided I was too good for her." After he places his hands over his eyes, I scoot closer to him and put my arm around his shoulder. Then I lean into his ear.
"Don't worry. Your special one is still out there." I whisper and grab my glass and the popcorn bowl. I stand up and start to head towards the door. "Your special one is out there too, sis." Kendall says to me. I smile and think, "I know."
I open the patio door and I feel a wave of warm air as I enter the living room. Sitting on the couch, is Hadley. She has her phone in her hand, texting I assume.
"I was wondering when you would figure out that it's way too cold to be outside at this hour, so I just came inside."
I walk over to the couch and I set the red bowl and my glass on the table. She stares at the bowl with a questioning expression.
"Hey, that's one of your mother's ceramic bowls that she made for the art show-" Hadley starts to say, but I hear her words start to slur so I couldn't hear the rest of what she was saying. Then all of the sudden I lose control of my strength and I can feel myself fall backwards into the the chair next to Hadley. Then I black out.

There I am, in the back seat of my parents car. My mom is in the driver's seat and my dad is in the passenger's seat. I look around me. I was seated in the back seat of our blue convertible. I hear this screeching noise coming from a car or two
ahead of us. In the middle of the highway we jolt to a stop and we crash into the semi in front of us. I hear my mom scream as the car's airbag hits her in the face. Then I hear my dad yell my name and tell me to cover my head. I place my hands over my face.

I hear this bang coming from outside and I know I shouldn't look up. I should just leave my hands over my eyes. That's what I should do. But I don't.
I open my eyes and remove them from my face. I look over at my mother, the airbag is now colored red with blood. I feel my mouth quiver as I say her name.
No. This can't be happening. I shake dad and he falls over towards the window.
"Dad! Dad, wake up! Mom needs help!~I think her necks broken and-" I stop when I touch his face. It's like a stone. I reach over and feel his pulse. I start to taste my salty tears. I feel nothing. Not even a beat. I do the same to my mother. I hear nothing from her either. I start to cry. I hit the console in front of me with a strong force. Then I yell "Why me? What have I done! I don't deserve this!" Then I feel this ache in my head. I glance up at the windshield just in time to see a black shadow of movement move across the car windshield.
After I see that shadow I faint and my vision goes black, again.
