A World of Darkness
By emsie98
My dreams were kindly put on hold by the delightful ring of my Monday morning alarm clock. I was awake, wide awake. Monday had finally come. School, had finally come. Weekends are just too long for me. It's two days of constant boredom that simply drag on and on and never seem to end. Monday signifies the end of that lifelessness and the beginning of a pleasant school week.
I ate breakfast, smeared gel through my hair, brushed my teeth and threw on my uniform. Before I knew it, I was at school and on my way to class. "Oi Luke!" shouted Rhys, catching up to me then walking by my side. My full name was actually Lukas Taylor but it just seemed like everyone was too lazy to say Lukas, including my best mate, Rhys Williams. He has always, and I mean always, had my back. He had shaggy blonde hair, green eyes and was of medium build. Rhys was a true brother and just a great guy. Great surfer too. He was age champion 2 years in a row. He was the toughest guy I knew, both physically and mentally. Other people might've disagreed. Most kids would've named Scott Jones as toughest and I wouldn't argue with that. Scott was the school bully and the leader of his army. His loyal followers were his so called mates Dean White, Zane Anderson and Johnny Davison. The girls in my year were pretty forward and just threw it out there that they thought Scott was 'so hot'. He had short black hair that shone dark brown in the sun, was fairly tall and had pretty good features. His eyes the colour of the water of Hawaii's most exquisite beach: the perfect combination of the most extraordinary sky blue and the calmest forest green. His exceptional muscle definition gleamed with every movement. The rest of the bully gang were all about medium build. Dean had short charcoal black hair and hazel eyes. Zane was dark blonde with brown eyes as well as Johnny who had shaggy brown hair and hazel eyes.
If it hadn't been for Rhys, I would've been the bullies' primary target, being a foot shorter than them and the skinniest guy my age. Not to mention I was head of the class in a few subjects. A short scrawny nerd equals perfect punching bag, but like I said, Rhys was always there for me and with him by my side, the bullies didn't even bother. Plus it wasn't like I was a threat to them in terms of the girls. My best feature was probably my short brown hair or big brown eyes, only magnified through my glasses of course.
"So what's up first on your timetable?" asked Rhys, adjusting the strap of his backpack on his shoulder.
"English," I said with a smile. "What about you?"
"History, I think. Can't wait!" his sarcasm made me laugh.
"You know you love it Rhys... deep down."
History was Rhys' worst subject. He just hated it. But I think the fact that he was convinced Mrs Miller was the most horrible teacher in the world and that she was completely out to get him, was a contributing factor. It seemed as if she was always on alert for the slightest mistake to yell at Rhys or send him to the Principal's office. It was pretty funny, but not for Rhys.
I was so glad to be starting the school day with English. It was my best and favourite subject. I wanted to make a career out of it, whether it be an author or a journalist. I couldn't get enough of it. But just like Rhys' thoughts on History, the teacher did make a difference and that year I had the best in the faculty. Mrs Wilton. She was the most sophisticated, intelligent, generous yet considerate and easy-going person I knew; perfect qualities for a teacher.
"Good morning class. I'd like to start this lesson with some good news, for one student in particular. Congratulations on getting 100% in our last exam... Lukas Taylor!" she said cheerfully. Proudly. Gracefully.
My cheeks turned rosy red at the sound of her compassionate voice. She gestured me to the front of the class, everyone applauding as I walked towards her. Expectedly, some booed and made jokes. Scott and his gang to be exact. To be honest, it did bring me down slightly but after receiving a simply perfect handshake from Mrs Wilton and my exam, the proud grin returned to my face.
