My twin sister was the only person in the world I thought I’d known inside and out. Apparently, I was wrong.
Twin sisters share a unique bond, one that can't be broken by miles, time, or even death. Hannah and Hope Morton are no exception. When Hope takes her own life, Hannah loses a sister and a best friend, a catastrophe she isn't sure she'll survive herself.
With her family in ruins, Hannah is slowly disappearing, drowning in a sea of misery. Even her wild, energetic best friend can't pull her out of her grief. Desperate to help Hannah, her brother comes home from college, bringing his best friend Julian along, the first boy to break Hannah’s heart. None of their efforts are enough to pull Hannah off her self destructive path, though. Julian is the only one who can get through to her, working his way into her frozen soul with cocky remarks and genuine love that warms her from the inside out.
As Hannah works to find answers, she continues to uncover new secrets and people that reveal a side of Hope she had never shared with her twin. Alone now, Hannah must make a decision of her own: move on and start a new life with the people she has left, or let the weight of her grief drag her down with her sister.
<Excerpt from book, Chapter One>
April 1
This is the day that I look forward to every year. The day that I wake up early and together we show them how devious we really can be. Today is the one day that I am as fearless and confident as you are every day. The day that I become brave, simply because you believe in me. Today is the one day that we create the chaos that only a great prank can. The day we sit back to watch and laugh at their surprised expressions when all our plans are set into motion. Today is the day that we drag them down to our level.
We’ve always worn the badge of trickster well… you and I.
Remember last year when we broke into the school and moved all of Coach Carr’s things out of his office? Remember the look on his face when he found his desk and file cabinets — along with the rest of his office — moved to the third floor boys’ bathroom? His face had held a mixture of shock, awe, anger, and amusement. He didn’t know whether to punish us or congratulate us on our ingenuity. Of course, he went with door number one, and we spent the rest of the school year in detention, but it was worth it.
Or, how about the prank we pulled on Celia Harmon? Blue paint dripping from her hair, her dress covered in an assortment of paint, glitter, and feathers. She’d promised to get back at us, that we wouldn’t get away with it. And yet, there never was any retribution. She always did lack imagination.
Remember?
I don’t even know why I’m asking. Of course, you remember. You just don’t care. How could I believe that you ever really cared? If you had, this wouldn’t be happening right now. I wouldn’t be sitting here, writing in my journal and railing at you for ditching me so thoughtlessly. I should be out, enjoying myself, enjoying life by your side.
But, I’m not, and I have no plans to leave the bubble I have created. And it’s all because of you and your selfishness.
Why? Why did you do it? Why didn’t you clue me in as to your plans? Did I really mean so little to you? I thought we were in this together. Hope and Hannah Morton. Twin sisters. Best friends. Always together, never apart.
Us against the world.
Did you forget that? Yes, I suppose you did. Either that, or you just didn’t care.
