I stared at Avery in horror. A wicked smirk sat on his lips, along with my first kiss.
I had loved one boy since the summer of 6th grade and had spent five years to build up the courage to tell him how I felt. I saved my lips only for his, and now, my first kiss was gone, stolen by Avery.
Anger quickly boiled inside me. "Avery!" I cried. "You're a jerk! Why did you do that?!"
I waited angrily for a response. His grey eyes seemed to haze over and he turned away. My anger quickly subsided and I was refilled with guilt.
"I-i'm sorry-" I began, I heard him snicker and he turned back around to me with a grin.
"Get some backbone," He teased. "If you get angry, then get angry. You're to passive."
"Stop toying with me!" I yelled reaching out to hit him. He didn't dodge my awkward punch, instead he stood there, obviously amused.
"Why would I want to do that?" He cooed.
"Because it's mean!" I scolded, feeling slightly child-like.
"And?" He inquired, backing away.
"Y-you can't just be mean to people-"
"Oh Casey," He sighed. "But I like you."
For some reason that made my heart skip. Perhaps because I had never been told that before, i'd never been an interest to boys. I quickly shook the thought away.
"Stop being a jerk!" I cried watching him walk back down the sidewalk to his house. "And don't walk through the grass!" He turned immediately, just in spite of me, strolling along our freshly placed grass. "Ugh!" I cried slamming the door.
I sat down picking up my phone, Danielle should definitely know about this. I paused before hitting send, that would just give him the satisfaction. I pondered this idea for a second. If I ignored what he did he might try it again, but if I told someone he would know it got to me, and probably try it again.
I shoved my face into the throw pillow on our couch.
"I hate you Avery Shaw!" I screamed. It didn't help and I found myself debating on texting Christian or drowning my sorrows in food.
I chose the second, sitting and watching any non-romantic movie I could find.
The doorbell rang and I ran to the kitchen grabbing the biggest knife I could find. The doorbell rang again and I swung it open furiously, the knife ready to stab.
Christian looked at me slightly surprised but he quickly began laughing, lowering my knife-wielding hand.
"Oh, I...i'm sorry."
"I'm not Avery, don't worry-"
"How'd you know I," I paused realizing what he meant. "You saw!?"
"Yeah," Christian laughed, pushing his dirty blonde hair back. "It kind of shocked me....I guess it shocked you too." He glanced at the knife and I set it on the entry-way shelf, opening the door so he could come in.
"Yeah, I was gunna kill him," I laughed nervously, not to sure if I was joking or serious. "But it was you....I guess you saved his life."
We were both silent for a second. before Christian turned to me.
"I think," Christian sighed. "That you should be careful around him, he seems.......strange."
I looked at Christian surprised. As far as I knew they had been friends since Avery moved into the house in 8th grade.
I smiled after a few seconds. "Yeah, I will, don't worry..."
"Okay," He laughed tussling my hair. "How's your job going?"
"Oh!" I squeaked, surprised he knew about it. "Yeah, it's fun, a lot if people I normally only see at school go there all the time....it's nice when it's summer and I don't see them..."
Another silence consumed us and I remembered the confession I had been rehearsing in my mind.
"C-Christian..." I breathed looking down at my feet.
"Yeah?" He asked, I felt his eyes burn into me.
"I...um...I really," I looked up to him, his deep brown eyes melted me and I lost my courage. "I really need to sleep." I lied.
Christian leaned back a little peering out the window. "It's day still."
My face burned and I waved the fact away. "I haven't been sleeping well lately, I think i'm an insomniac." I mumbled hoping to sound convincing.
"Alright." He laughed, he obviously didn't buy it. "I'll go then."
"O-okay...." I smiled opening the door for him. "Bye, Christian."
"Yeah, see ya." He laughed walking down the side walk.
I closed the door quickly and locked it. I couldn't believe I almost told him. I felt butterflies, and the thought of Christian caring about me made me smile. My mind quickly dismissed this, however, reminding me of Avery's kiss.
And for some reason, my heart began to race again.
