I felt like this was the first day of my life. Stepping foot into my new apartment, in Seattle, was like a breath of fresh air into my tired jet-lagged body. My apartment may be small, the size of a shoe box some might say, but it is mine and I earned it. I could not be more proud or happy to be home.
As I looked out the old rusted windows I couldn't help but notice the stark difference of my new environment to the one which I had been in for the past six years. There was a small tug at my heart when I thought about my abandoned dorm room in The University of Texas.
As a young women, fresh out of high school I was more than nervous to move half way across the country to start a new life. I was breaking free of my old life and becoming the woman that I had always wanted to be. Now I had come back a new woman. And while I may still be working on my confidence, I am a self-sufficient person with a heart of gold and nobody could take that away from me.
My mind was distracted as I heard my phone ringing, I smiled when I saw it was my brother, David.
"Hey Bro" I answered in a very chipper voice. I knew he would be smiling at the other end, as we always do when hear each others voice after a long bout of silence.
"Hey Bird, how's the move going?" He asked. I hated the nickname he had given me when we were children. Even now at twenty four years old, I still cannot seem to shake it.
"My name is Avery asshole! I'm not a fucking Pigeon!" I playfully yelled at him, we always joke and talk this way so I was happy today was not different. David tends to stress over my wellbeing so moving day was bound to set him on edge.
"Yeah, yeah whatever bitch! So seriously, how is my little sister?" He asked as he always does.
"I'm good, just got to wait for my couch to be delivered and then I'll be all settled in. How are you?" I responded politely.
"That's awesome! I'm good too, I thought I could come around for dinner tonight and we can watch the game together?"
"The game?" I asked confused.
"HOCKEY AVERY!" He yelled at me like I was stupid. I shrugged to myself, to be honest when it come to ice hockey I really could not care less.
"Oh, well I would love to see you but I really could not care less about men betting each other up for a ball." I calmly said back, knowing I would get a reaction like I always did.
"I'm going to pretend you did not just insult the best American past time that way and tell you that I will be over at seven. We can eat and then watch the game, my best friend is playing tonight."
"That's right, Nissan right?" I asked
"Jesus Christ, its Mason Lessard! He is the number one draft pick for the Washington Capitals!" He huffed into the phone. He always gets this way when we talk about sports. I could never understand his passion for a game that he does not even play. I always end up just placing him.
"Oh hockey! I can't wait, I'll see you then!" I laid on the sarcasm thick, I heard David's throaty chuckle down the phone, warming my heart as he always does.
"Yeah sure, whatever, I'll see you then" He hung up and I decided to make something to eat while waiting for the delivery man, lord knows I was in for a long wait.
The day flew by and before I knew it David was at the door of my apartment complex, buzzing time after time to be let in. He was always so impatient. I had only just buzzed him in when he came barging through the door of my apartment, his six foot stocky frame felt like it almost filled the whole apartment.
"Jesus, this is your place Avery? You're practically living in the slums!" He yelled at me, in fully protective big brother mode. I just rolled my eyes at him, taking the plastic contains full of Chinese food out of his practically shaking hands.
