Chapter 3: Jasmine's POV
-----------------------------
"Eric?" He pushed past us and began hurrying towards a couple of freshmen.
"What's his deal?" Gaston smirked watching him disappear into a sea of students. Aurora rolled her eyes at him and turned to me.
"Jas! Are you trying out for cheerleading this year? We could really use you on the squad!" she asked cheerfully, pretending to wave a pair of pom poms. Aurora was cheer captain of the sophomore squad; her pep, enthusiasm and encouragement had earned her the role. I laughed and brushed the question aside easily.
"Ha of course not. Dance takes up too much time." I shook my head as she huffed and started to pout at me.
"Boo. You never even got to come up to our chateau at all this summer. It was so wild, I slept for ages afterward." I smiled and patted her on the shoulder.
"Nice try Sleeping Beauty. But I'm way too invested in dance to quit."
I glanced over Aurora’s shoulder and saw Drizella and Anastasia Tremaine lurking on the outskirts of our circle casting glances at Henry Charming.
"Don't look now, Charming but your fan club is stalking you." I said jerking my head in their direction. He followed my gaze and groaned as they began squealing at the eye contact but trying to look calm. Aurora saw where we were looking and shook her head in disgust.
"Ugh not them. What awful girls. They just barely made the squad. They hardly qualified to be part of the base. They dropped so many people." she sighed quietly and listed off a few more of their flaws and how they could work to improve. Even when she was mad she was perfectly ladylike.
“Why don’t you tell them your advice?” I asked her in confusion.
“Don’t you think I’ve tried?” Aurora moaned, “They are way beyond help.” We had begun laughing at her weary expression when I felt an arm snake around my waist.
"Hey babe," Jafar hissed into my ear. I shuddered and pushed him away.
"Get off me," I frowned and began walked quickly away from my group. I could feel him glaring after me in embarrassment. Jafar made my skin crawl. He truly thinks he can just waltz up to my group of sophomores and I'm gonna beg for the chance to date him? Not likely. And it seemed pretty obvious to me that a junior like Jafar was more likely after my father's wealth and success than me. My dad owns and operates a chain of restaurants specializing in Arabian cuisine. He's made so much off of his entire chain of restaurants, it's a wonder I still go to public school. I’m surprised my father has never even mentioning switching. It’s probably because he attended Disney High too, and doesn’t want me to forget my roots. He’s accomplished so much with his education he can’t think of any reason why I can’t as well. Even though I don't flaunt it, most kids at WED High know how rich my family is. It's really hard to tell whether someone you're friends with or dating is just using you to get perks. That's what makes Aurora such a good friend to have. She's just as wealthy as me, if not more, so there's no worries about her loyalty. She has no reason to fake being my friend when there’s tons of people who would kill to be in my position as her best friend.
I walked down the basically empty hall to my locker. Most of the school was still milling around outside. When I reached it I quickly entered my combination and the locker opened. I reached up and took off my huge gold triangle earrings and placed them in my locker. I took of the rest of my gold, the bangles and the necklace and put them in too. Then I placed my designer bag in the locker and took out a more modest, less expensive one. My dad loves to shower me with gifts as his only child, which makes me really uncomfortable. I wear them so he sees that I'm using them but once he's out of sight I usually put the gifts away. I'd rather have less attention on me. I shut the locker and glanced down the hall. There was a guy about my age wearing a purple t shirt and worn khakis. He was banging his fist against a locker and it wouldn't budge. I slipped some text books into my locker and walked up to him. Hearing the soles of my shoes echoing against the cool floors of the empty hallway, he turned face me. The guy had warm brown eyes and dark, almost black hair. His skin was about my tone too.
"Hi," he said softly. I smiled at him then gestured at his locker.
"Need a hand?" He nodded, looking embarrassed about not being able to open his stubborn locker and I took over, reading the numbers off the slip of paper he handed me. With a soft click the locker opened. I turned back to a surprised and impressed face and handed the guy his combination.
"Wow thanks a lot," he said slowly, smiling at me, "My name's Aladdin."
"I'm Jasmine," I blushed. Why was I blushing? Suddenly the bell rang and everyone began filing into the school.
"Jasmine!" I heard Aurora call out to me. I glanced in the direction of her voice and saw that she had just walked into the school. She started wildly gesturing for me to join her. I turned back to say bye to Aladdin but he was gone. I slowly walked over to Aurora, but I couldn't get my mind off of the guy with the sweet, genuine smile.
“Where’d you go Jas?” Aurora frowned at me when I got to her. I rolled my eyes.
“Away from Jafar, of course. I thought he would lose interest in me over the summer but I guess not,” I groaned in response. Aurora laughed at my grimace.
“Jafar’s not that bad, Jasmine. He sure likes you!” Or my family’s money.
“Whatever. Let’s go to homeroom,” I suggested, eager to change the subject. Aurora shrugged and followed me to the homeroom that we shared by some stroke of luck.
We stopped at Aurora's locker so she could put her cheer bag inside and touch up her makeup.
"So when are you going get a boyfriend Miss Matchmaker?" I smirked at her reflection. Aurora swiped a tube of lipgloss over her full lips and puckered in the mirror. "When setting people up gets boring," she smiled as she shut her locker. We started walking down the hall again and Aurora got a ton of double takes. She just has that effect on people.
"Hellooo Aurora," Naveen winked as we walked past. I rolled my eyes and pulled her into the room on our left. I sat down at a seat in the middle of the classroom and Ro perched on the desk next to mine. The teacher began calling role and after she said my name, I zoned out, my eyes drifting to the hall. Suddenly, I saw a purple t-shirt hurry past. I leaned toward trying to see if it was Aladdin but whoever it was had disappeared. I let out a huff and sat back in the chair. I wasn't quite sure why I was caught up on this guy, I just was. I glanced behind me and saw a girl with dark curly hair tied up in a bun. She reached down and picked up a cross county drawstring bag.
"Hi!" I beamed at her, "I'm Jasmine!"
She looked at me and let out a yawn, "How are you awake right now? I'm seriously about to doze." We started laughed and she returned my smile.
"I'm Tiana."
"Nice to meet you!" At the moment the bell rang. "Well I guess I'll see you later!" I said as Aurora and I stood up and walked out of the room. Ro glanced behind us at Tiana.
"She moved here from New Orleans. I heard she's really fast," she said nodding at the cross country bag.
When we reached the end of the hall, Aurora turned to the English wing, and I went into my Business Management class. My room was filled with rich students I knew from my country club... and Aladdin. He sat in the back of the room next to an empty desk. He was looking down at a notebook as I started to make my way back to him. Suddenly I felt someone grip my wrist and pull me down into the desk on my right. Jafar smiled deviously as the teacher walked in and told to stay in our seats. I looked back to see Aladdin quickly duck his head down. With a sigh I faced the front trying to listen to the teacher and ignore Jafar staring at me.
