So I've been interested in twins lately and my mind decided to get an idea for a story so I wrote it out.  I don't know if I'll continue this, I don't even know what's going to happen myself...

Some people believe that identical twins possess the same soul; that they are simply one person in two bodies.  Others believe that it is simply a defect where the egg splits in the womb and becomes two.  No mystic connections, just an occurrence of science.  Whatever you believe doesn't matter to me.  All I know is that from the moment they are conceived, till the day they die, twins are always together.  At least that’s how it is with my brother and I.

It was our eighteenth birthday, Rylan and mine.  We woke up at the same time in our shared room.  Rylan kept his eyes closed and sat up sniffing the sweet aroma of banana pancakes and maple syrup.  He turned his head in my direction and opened his cloudy blue eyes.

“Mom made our favorite,” he stated looking in my general direction.  I quickly untangled myself from my sheets and made my way to our small closet.  I shifted through our clothes and found simple jeans and a plain baby blue tee for myself.

“What do you wanna wear today?” I threw the question back at Rylan as he stood up and stretched.

“Anything’s fine, just don’t make me look too ugly,” he snickered I glanced back in time to see him step forward.

“No!  Wait my textboo-“ Crash!  My brother cursed as he tripped over my stack of trig and history books and fell flat on his face.

“You okay?” I asked from where I was by the closet.  He sat up and rubbed his head.

“Christ Skylar!  You know I’m blind and you still leave your shit laying around!” He bellowed.  I flinched away.  My brother was usually the quiet, shy, and kind type of person, but he had an explosive temper.  I brushed it off; I would not let anything ruin my birthday.

“Sorry bout that.  Here,” I apologized and tossed him his clothes and they hit him square in the face and then fell to the ground.

“Pft-Hahahahaha!” I started laughing uncontrollably.  The look of shock on my brother’s face was ridiculous!  That and a moldy green PB and J was leaving a trail of green and purple slime as it slid down his face.

“Was wondering where my sandwich went,” I giggled.

“Skylar!” My brother screamed as he scrambled onto his feet.  I ran out the room, my feet pounding against the carpet.  I heard my brother’s feet pounding just as loud after me.  Without thinking I sprinted down the stairs and stopped at the bottom.  Uh-Oh.  I quickly whipped my head around in time to see my brother missing the first step and beginning to fall.  Crap!  I ran up two stairs and then dived and caught him before he could give himself a bloody concussion.

“Whoa…” he muttered.  I sighed in relief and then felt my ribs and chest throbbing.  Ugh, note to self: do not dive onto stairs.

“Argh,” Rylan hissed in pain and gripped his lower back.  My mom walked by and glanced at us.  I stared at her for a second.

“What in the world?” She asked raising an eyebrow.

“Mom?” Rylan asked craning his neck back and looking at our mother with sightless eyes.

“Hurry and get dressed, breakfast’s ready,” she sighed already used to our antics.  Rylan and I untangled ourselves from each other and sorely made our way back to our room.

“Sorry bout that,” my brother mumbled as he put on his sweater slash jacket slash shirt thing…I don’t know it was my payback for him trying to kill me.  I finished changing and stood next to my brother and looked into our full size mirror.  I adjusted my shirt and glanced at Rylan.  We shared the same pale skin, strawberry blonde hair, a few light freckles, exact same bone structure and height of 6’3”.  The only thing different was our eyes.  Mine were a striking electric blue like the deep sea, and my brother’s were a cloudy, ice blue, eyes that reflected nothing.

“Skylar?” Rylan glanced around with sightless eyes, unnerved by my silence.

“I’m still here,” I reassured him and he gave a slight smile.

“Let’s go grab our birthday pancakes!” I said with fake enthusiasm.  Rylan nodded his head silently, recovering his serene personality after this morning’s blow-up.

My brother gently placed a hand on my shoulder and I led him out of our room and down the stairs.  It was odd because he usually doesn't need help navigating our house.  Guess our little tumble this morning had made him wary.  Once we had cleared the last stair, he let go and shuffled into the kitchen greeting our mother cheerfully.  He sat in his usual seat at our small dining table for four and lightly brushed his fingers around his plate, searching for his fork.  Once he found it, he quickly stabbed into the slightly soggy banana pancakes and shoved a large piece into his mouth.  He groaned in pleasure and I shook my head while making my way over to my seat next to him.  I sat down and stared blankly at the pancakes before glancing over at the clock.

I sighed, only 7:00 in the morning and already I’m exhausted.  I forced myself to eat all of the pancakes and then washed my dishes.  I briskly walked to the front door and grabbed my car keys off the hook.  My brother’s head peaked around the corner drawn by the jingling of the keys.

“We going already?” He asked innocently.

“Yeah, it’s almost 7:30,” I stated.  He nodded and then disappeared to grab his backpack, mine was already in the car.  He jogged back and I opened the door being greeted by the light smell of rain in the morning.  Rylan walked out first and I followed closing the door behind me.  We both climbed into my Honda Civic and I swiftly turned on the engine.  Time for school, I thought with a silent groan.
