I woke up with a start and felt the familiar roughness of the health room sheet beneath my hand.

“Umm, excuse me,” I called into the darkness…Well darkness for me.  There was no response.  I sat in the bed for a minute and then sighed.  Where the bloody hell was Skylar?

“Chill Rylan, Skylar probably went to class,” I reassured myself.  I threw off the cheap sheet and swung my legs over the side of the bed.  I stood up and stretched my arms.  I reached down and grabbed my bag from where I left it leaning against the side of the bed and flung it on my shoulders.  I walked forward slowly, since I wasn’t very familiar with the set up of the Infirmary.  I hesitantly put my hands out and waved them in front of me.  Damn!  I must look pretty stupid right now.  Textbook blind kid.  I chuckled harshly to myself.  My shin bumped against the leg of the desk and I snickered changing directions.

“Take that,” I spat quietly and proceeded to get my foot caught on the leg of a chair.

“Uh!” I yelled in surprise before falling flat on my face….ow.  I lay there for a second with no motivation to get up.

“Umm…are you okay?” A girls voice whispered from the doorway.  I quickly scrambled into a sitting position and faced myself to her direction.

“Here, let me help you,” her sweet voice came again, accompanied by light footsteps coming closer to my position on the floor.  She paused in front of me and went silent.  Don’t tell me…

“Umm, don’t worry, my hand’s not dirty or anything,” her voice raised a few octaves as the awkwardness got to her.  Hand, right.  She was probably offering me her hand to help me up.  How sweet, too bad I couldn’t see where it was!  I stuck out my own hand, hoping that if I reached far enough, I would find hers.

“My hand’s over here,” she piped with curiosity in her voice.  I blushed bright red and slapped my hand back to the ground.  I hoisted myself to my feet and paused looking down.

“Is something wrong?” She asked hesitantly.  Well the cat’s out of the freaking bag now isn’t it?!

“I’m Rylan McMullen, d-don’t you know already?” I felt awkward explaining myself to this girl.  Everyone in school knew about me already, maybe if she knew my name, she’d understand.

“Uh, okay?  I’m Cassidy Simmons and I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I could hear the anger building in her voice.  She probably thought I was playing a trick on her.  Better clear up the misunderstanding before it gets worse.

“I’m blind,” I stated.  There was a long awkward pause.

“Are you serious?!  Oh God!  I’m so sorry,” she stuttered in embarrassment.

“It’s okay, really, I’m used to it,” I smiled kindly reassuring the poor girl.

“You’re new aren’t you?” I asked maintaining my kind demeanor.  She gasped in surprise.

“Yeah!  How’d you know?  I mean you’re…” She didn’t finish, assuming I knew what she meant.  I just smiled more and replied.

“Most of the people here know who I am and that I’m…” I copied her open-ended sentence.  So I’ve got an attitude!  Sue me!

“Well yeah, so I’ll be going then,” she replied awkwardly probably catching my sarcasm.  Her light footsteps retreated a couple feet and stopped near the doorway.  There was a long pause.

“Are you…lost?” I asked hesitantly.  There was a sharp intake of breath and even more silence.

“Umm…do you know where…” I heard paper rustling and assumed she was taking out her schedule.

“Ms. Kelly’s English class is?” She asked quietly.

“Yeah, I can tell you where it is if you lead me there.  I have her next too,” I said sweetly.  I felt kind of bad for snapping at her about mentioning my obvious blindness.  She sounded cute and nice.  Yeah, when you’re blind you tend to judge people on their voices.

“Uh, sure!” She piped excitedly.  She stopped a foot away from me and went quiet.  I held out my arm.

“Can you lend me a shoulder?” I smiled clarifying her role in this endeavor.  I felt a small, soft hand take a hold of my own.  She gently placed my hand on her small shoulder.  She was short, probably around 5’5” and decently slim.  Her smooth, glossy hair brushed against the top of my hand as she turned her head forward.

“Turn left and then right at the end of the hallway.  English is the last class on the right,” I instructed after I had completed my analysis on the new girl.  I felt her nod and then begin to walk.  I giggled as she walked at a pace slower than dripping paint.  She was stiff and flinched when I readjusted my hand.

“Don’t be so worried, I can keep up with you at a normal pace,” I reassured her.  She nodded again and relaxed her shoulders, speeding up her walk.  We continued on in silence as she led me to the right and down the second hall.  No one was in the hall during classes so all that could be heard was the light tapping of her ballet flats and the gently thumps of my Vans.  I focused on figuring out where we were in the hall and she stopped.

“Welcome to English,” she said with a very bad English accent as she bowed.  I released my hand from her shoulder and chuckled.  This girl does have personality.  I heard the familiar squeak of the door opening and walked into English with a new friend.
