I skip over the crack in the sidewalk and start turning in circles. It's a beautiful day. The sun is out, making the snow shine like a layer of diamonds.
As I turn back around to face the front, a snowball hits me in the middle of the back. I turn around to see my best friend standing a few feet away, another snowball in hand. The snow is up mid-calf for her. We got a lot of snow this winter break. More than usual.
"You better run if you don't want this one hitting your face."
I don't waste another second and run across the street. From there I run towards my house, where my fort is ready. I had built it for an occasion like this. My fort was full of snowballs and I would have an advantage over Olivia.
As I got to my front yard, I dived behind the little wall just as a snowball came flying towards me. It hit the wall and I let out a sigh of relief.
I pull my gloves on and grab for a snowball. As Olivia runs closer, I get into my ready position. Then when she is a couple feet away from me, I launch it at her face. She tries to dodge it, but it curves and hits her shoulder. I release another snowball, and another. Not all of them are hitting her, but she doesn't have time to make her own snowballs.
"Hanna! Truce!" She yells out with her hands covering her face. "This isn't fair. I need to make snowballs too."
"You should've thought of that before starting this snowball fight." I shout back at her.
"Just give me 10 seconds." She asks.
"Fine. But I don't know what you could make with 10 seconds."
She looks over to me and runs over to her house which is next door.
"Four. Three. Two. One. Fire in the hole!" I yell and let a snowball fly.
Then she does something unusual. She moves towards my fort, slowly and looks around her in every direction. What the heck?
She finally spots what she was looking for and she nods to herself. As soon as she looks up, I launch another snowball at her.
"Now!" She lets out a cry.
From backyards and other places around the block my brothers and her sister pop out. Two of my brothers (Mathew and Lucas) were in college and the youngest one (Nick), who was still older than me was a senior in high school. Olivia's sisters, one younger and one older, come stand on each of her sides. "Fire!" She yells.
Then they all start throwing snowballs at me. I don't have much left, so I just bend behind the wall of my fort and start building more snowballs. I keep my eyes on everyone making sure they don't sneak up on me.
When I have a sufficient stack of snowballs, I throw them at everyone I can. I'm a softball pitcher, so most of my snowballs hit the intended target.
I'm almost out of snowballs when I get hit in the back with a snowball. There is something wrong here. Olivia, her sisters, and my brothers are all in front of me. I'm missing someone.
Then realization hit me hard in the face. I have invited Marty, my boyfriend over today. I turn around and see Marty leaning against a tree with a smug smile on his face. He's tossing a snowball up and down and when he aims it at me, I dive to the ground and it misses me.
"Come on Marty. It's one against six, not including you. Please help me." I whine and exaggeratedly flutter my eyelashes.
He lets out a laugh and says, "Sure." He leaps down and helps me start building snowballs. Olivia's team was busy building up a supply of snowballs too.
Soon snowballs were flying in our direction again, while we kept building more snowballs. As soon as our stack was almost as high as the wall, we started throwing them.
After about an hour of throwing snowballs, we got tired and called a truce.
"Hey, with all the snow we have, we can build a snow-family." Marty voices. He starts building the bottom of his snowman. I start building the bottom of the mom of the family with Olivia building the middle. My two oldest brothers are building two "teens" for the family. Olivia's sisters are working together to make a girl and a baby.
Marty is onto his second snowball now. Mathew is onto the head of his snowman. Lucas is packing the second ball on his bottom one to not topple. Mathew and Lucas finish first, and help the rest of us lift our snowballs on top of each other.
I run into the house and grab a couple carrots and Mathew's favorite hat. I walk out and put Mathew's hat on his snowman and start shoving carrots into the snowmen to create noses. Olivia starts poking sticks as arms into our snowman. I pick up a couple rocks from near the sidewalk and add eyes to our snowman.
Everyone else soon finished theirs when Mathew walked out of the house. His eyes bugged out when he saw his hat.
"Who put my hat on the snowman?!" He snatched it off and stuffed it into his pocket. We were all laughing and he couldn't tell which one of us did it.
"I'm watching you. Watching all of you." He made an 'I'm watching you' gesture and pointed at all of us.
"We get it," Nick said through laughs. "Let's all go in and get warmed up."
"We can have hot chocolate. And popcorn. And watch a movie." I let out in energetic bursts.
"Sure Hanna. Go all out." He wrapped an arm around my waist and gave me a peck on the cheek. My already pink cheeks got darker as I blushed.
"Eww. Marty, wait til we're not around." Nick called out as he ran to the house.
We all headed into the house and stripped of our wet layers. We all went into the kitchen and I started boiling a huge pot of water for hot chocolate.
Our parents were never home, so they wouldn't be bothered by all the people in the house. It felt more comfortable with all of us in the house, masking the usual silence. As soon as the hot chocolate is finished, the popcorn popped, and cookie packages opened, we headed into the living room. Marty sat in the arm chair and I plopped into his lap.
Mathew and Olivia's sisters took up the couch. Olivia placed the beanbag at between the couch and arm chair and took that spot. Lucas and Nick were sprawled out on the floor. Nick popped in a movie and we all settled in for a long and fun night.
