Symptoms include: emotional instability, extreme reactions, feelings of worthlessness, fears of abandonment, insecurity, sensitivity to feelings of rejection, impulsivity, and impaired social relationships
Symptoms are often present in early adulthood.
Treatments include: talk therapy, medication in some cases, and hospitalization for extreme symptoms
To live with BPD some need intensive and often in-patient care. Other than that they can live close to normal lives.
Causes and risk factor are not well understood and studies are in the early stage. Between scientists it is generally agreed that genetic and environment are likely to be involved. It may be an inherited trait and specific genes are being studied for any possible link to the Disorder.
Co-occuring Disorders are depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, self harm, suicidal behavior, and suicide.
In movies or TV shows people with BPD are often depicted as very violent people when in reality BPD sufferers are not violent in nature and are unlikely to hurt others. They have anger issues in which they direct anger toward themselves most times.
Severe BPD can cause brief psychotic episodes. BPD was originally thought to be atypically Borderline versions or other mental disorders.
Diagnosis can only be done by a healthcare professional and is based on symptoms the patient exhibits. Lab tests or imaging are not required.
BPD can last for years and even for life.
