Astrid Scruggs was optimistic, happy and lived a normal life until one night changed everything.
On the night of Astrid's 17th birthday, her father is arrested for killing someone while driving drunk. After going through trials that take up the whole summer, Astrid's father is put in prison and sentenced to death row.
With no family in Texas, Astrid moves to Mystic Falls, Virginia where her brother Aaron lives. Concerned about Astrid's happiness, he forces her to go to the school dance. There, Astrid meets the dark and mysterious Damon Salvatore.
What Astrid doesn't know is that Damon has already in a way met her before.
