I believe pain is more than a wound or broken bone, yeah that sounds angsty and emo but hear me out, I believe true pain is walking up to someone in a nursing home and asking when their children/grandchildren last called them.
They look at you and give you a gentle sigh, but never say a word. You look at their sad glazed over eyes and folded hands, you know what the answer is, 'a long time'. True pain is something that can't be seen. True pain is being a mother who's life was saved by the birth of her child, the child that grows up giving you hateful looks and scornful responses. True pain is watching your partner destroy themselves with drugs and trying to help them but not getting anywhere. True pain is watching someone want to end their life and them telling you about their painful stories then seeing them the next day acting like they aren't completely broken inside. True pain is when you have to bring down the self-esteem of others just to get your sick high that sticks for a couple of seconds then fades away as soon as you realize what you really are. True pain is wanting to end your life because you don't thing there is a happy ending, but people are romanticizing suicide so much that you can't actually get help for how you feel so you're stuck and you can't do anything but try harder and it only crushes you more. I believe true pain is something that damages us permanently, I believe it is something that can have an affect on us for the worse. True pain drains you of all you have for awhile but you have to brush it off and pretend like nothing ever penetrated your armor, because that would show a weakness that people would stick their nails into and rip you apart piece by piece peeling you away until you're nothing.
True pain is having to act like you feel nothing at all.
