The waves crashed violently along the side of the small Greek Island. Everyone knew that the storm was brewing; they just didn't know when it would strike. I never knew why my brother Orestez hired assassins to kill my mother. I also never knew why they didn't kill me, especially when they had the chance. I was vulnerable. A premature newborn whose mother vanished before her hopeless and empty eyes. When my mother died, my father was always there for me. But my father also never knew that I would be kidnapped, assaulted, and have my life be torn apart at the age of nine.
"Elektra, go and get some rest," my father told me a few weeks after the kidnapping.
"Your brother and I must speak in private."
I slowly tip-toed up the stairs of our house to my room. I opened the door slowly and walked along the creaky, wooden floorboards of my small room. I left the door slightly ajar, so I could still hear the voices of my father and brother.
"Elektra needs training! It won't be long till she gets murdered just like mother! Right?! You said you would protect her....I-I can't believe you!"
"Orestez-"
"Don't even try to pretend that things will be alright! This young girl has probably had her life ruined because of your stupidity!"
At the time, my father was oblivious to the fact that my mother's blood was on the hands of Orestez and his henchmen.
"Orestez! I understand your concern for Elektra. And believe me, I think that Elektra's training should begin immediately, but I strongly disagree with your thought of her life being ruined. I know that deep down, Elektra will be an amazing and powerful young woman."
I closed the door with caution to prevent them from hearing me. I blew out the candle by my bed to be surrounded by complete darkness. That night, I dreamed of myself as a strong grown-up, a fearless individual; not a feared assassin or a pawn in a very deadly game of chess.
