BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
I jolt awake at the annoying sound of my alarm clock set to 5:00 A.M. One might ask why I, a 17 year old girl, would want to wake up at 5:00 in the morning on a Saturday? Well I have two simple words to answer that question – it is, once again, Moving Day. The day where I will leave behind everything I have come to know and love –such as my house, school, and friends –only to go to a new place full of the unknown. Because of my step-dad's job as a business manager, this will now be my fourth time relocating since elementary school. The difference this time being that I will be moving out of state. In a couple of hours, I will be on a plane leaving my beautiful home in Oregon to begin my new life in Southern California.
After I have forced myself to crawl out of bed and take a quick shower, I throw on a pair of loose-fitting black jeans, a royal blue tank top, and slip into my jet black Chuck Taylors. Not bothering with any make-up, I messily throw my sleek, black hair into a bun on the top of my head and shrug on my Hollister zip-up hoodie. Grabbing my gray carry-on Jansport backpack, I take one last glimpse at my now empty, former bedroom before drowsily heading downstairs.
"Good morning, Rion!" my overly-eager step-dad, Brock, greets me from the old rocking chair in our former living room. "You ready to leave?"
"Ready as I'll ever be." I reply with all the zeal that I can muster as I make my way into the kitchen.
"That's the spirit!" Brock chants flashing me a charming grin before returning all of his attention back to his laptop and coffee. Looking at him, I think back to the day when Brock became part of me and my brother's life. My mom told me that her newest boyfriend would be coming over to meet us and warned me to be on my best behavior. I already despised the new man Mom brought in to replace my late Father, who passed just three years prior to my meeting Brock. I planned on running him off like I had her last few boyfriends. The moment my mother opened the front door revealing a grinning Brock in our doorway, I knew I wouldn't get my wish. Brock has sunshine blonde hair, ocean blue eyes, and a likeableness that radiates from his dimpled smile leaving him impossible to dislike. My half-sister, a six-year old version of Brock, is the same way.
After heading downstairs and grabbing an apple left on the counter for breakfast, I roam down the vacant hallway to my parent's room, hoping to find my mom. Letting myself in through the open doorway, I find her finishing some last minute packing.
"Do we really have to leave?" I ask my mom, slipping my hands into my back pockets as I lean back on the wall beside the doorway.
"Good morning to you, too." My mom replies giving me a pointed look.
"I'm serious mom. Why can't we just stay here? I don't want to leave." I plead with her, poking out my lower lip as I do so.
Mom slightly rolls her eyes at my dramatic act. "Rye. We've talked about this already. You know we can't stay. This is for Brock's job. I know it's difficult honey, but we wouldn't leave unless it was absolutely necessary." Mom says as she makes her way over towards me and wraps me into a warm embrace. "You have nothing to worry about, honey. They'll love you." She comfortingly whispers into my ear before pulling back and looking me in my light green eyes that reflect her's perfectly. Besides my having black hair and my mom having an almond brown color hair, we look very similar. I have my mom's same slender nose, full pink lips, and petite body type. If life hadn't brought my mom her wear and tear, we could probably pass for twins.
Giving me one final kiss on the cheek, my mom zips the last bag of luggage before taking it up in her hand, and ushering me out of the house with her. When we arrive outside, Brock helps my mom place the last bit of luggage into the trunk of our black Toyota while my 20 year old brother, Preston, sits on the curb of our old driveway, staring into nothingness. He looks more disheveled than usual. His chocolate brown hair, usually neatly combed in a messy way, is sticking up on the sides as if he didn't even think to brush it after rolling out of bed this morning. The other thing is his eyes. Instead of the bright, happy blue-green color they usually take, they look kind of dull and depressed.
"Hey. You okay?" I question him as I make my way over to where he is sitting.
Slightly jumpy from being pulled from his thoughts, he replies, "Hey Rye. I'm fine. You excited to leave?" giving me a fake smile.
"No. Are you?" I reply with a slight shake of my head.
"No." he says with a sad smile.
I take a seat beside him and we sit there in silence, counting down our final seconds before we have to leave. As I look around, I begin to recall all the good memories I've had in this house. I think back to my small Sweet Sixteen birthday party I had here and my first date under the big willow tree in my front yard, mainly because mom said I couldn't leave the house. In her defense, I was only in 9th grade. I think of all the sleepovers and girl days I've had with my old best friends that I said a hard good bye to yesterday. I'm going to miss this place.
About 3 minutes after I sat down with Preston, as Emely skips out of the house and to the car, Brock locks the front door, signaling us that it's time to leave. We all file into the car, getting comfortable as we begin our 1 hour journey to the airport where we will begin our trip down to California. I quietly whisper one final goodbye to my familiar home, holding the last 3 years of my life, as we head off to a whole new one elsewhere.
