Chapter 2
We walked up to the bridge to cross the river, and found a goat sitting there.
“Hey Cindy, look it’s a goat!” Jack shouted out.
“Beg Pardon?” the goat replied. A goat just talked. I must be going insane.
“D-did you j-just talk” I stammered.
“You can understand me?” the goat exclaimed with surprise in his eyes.
“Y-yes” I stammered back.
“You must be fairytale children! Come, come what is it that you need?” The goat asked us.
“Well, uh, um...” I had no idea what to say. I think the goat had realized that we had no idea who he was so he said,
“Billy Goat Gruff at your service”
“Nice to meet you Billy, but what we need is to cross that bridge.” Jack replied calmly.
“Oh, you’ll never get past with that nasty troll under the bridge. He’ll tear you to pieces by the time you step foot on this here bridge.” The goat told us in his little British accent.
“T-troll?” I stammered.
“Oh yes. Quite right, I’ve been trying to get across for years!” Billy exclaimed. I turned around and started to walk away when Jack stopped me.
“Don’t give up, Cindy, I have a plan.” He encouraged me. We stood in the soft grass for a few minutes discussing the plan. I had a feeling it would work. I walked up to the bridge, and started walking.
“Are you mad?!?! He will gobble you up, he will!!” Billy warned me. As I trip-trapped across the bridge the troll came out. He was about 15 feet tall, green and fat with warts everywhere. He yelled,
“Who’s that trip-trapping across my bridge?”
“Oh It is just I, Cindy the skinniest of them all! Wait for Jack the plumper one you can gobble him up!” I lied.
“Well, off with you then” the troll told me. What a gullible troll. After I was across, Jack stepped onto the bridge. The troll came out once more and said,
“Who’s that trip-trapping across my bridge?”
“Oh it is just I, Jack the medium sized of them all. Wait for big fat er…. Bob!! You can gobble him up.” Jack fibbed. After that one line the plan went wrong.
“I see no others!” The troll yelled. He took his gigantic club and smashed through the plywood bridge.
“Jack, run!” I screamed in fear. Jack sprinted but fell into the water by the trolls reeking feet. I don’t know WHAT went through his mind at that point, but I’m glad it did. Jack ran and hid under his legs.
“Where did boy go!!?” The troll screamed in anger. Of course! That troll can’t see past his belly! Jack sprinted up the hill and onto land. It was a good thing he took track before school was out.
“That….was…..close…” he panted.
“No kidding” I replied with relief.
“So where to now?” Jack questioned coming back to his senses.
“The marketplace” I replied. There was only one thing. Where the heck was the marketplace?
