I woke up in the hospital. I glanced around the room for the faces of my family.
"Grandpa, Lou? Where's mom?"
"Er. Amy, the doctor said you'll be able to home soon! Won't that be nice?"
Lou was edging around the bush, creating a diversion to the train wreck that was sure to come.
"No! No!" I seemed to cross into hysteria and went numb with fear.
"It's all my fault."
"No! Amy!" she held me, as I sobbed.
After the doctor came in to give us an update on me, Lou looked at grandpa, who said, "Get some rest, Amy. We'll be back to pick you up in the morning."
But, sleeping would bring nightmares. There was no stopping how tired I was, and I lasped into the expanse of ocean.
"Mom, thanks for doing this. He looks horrible. He needs to see Scott.""Let's just concentrate on getting there, Amy."
Then, it changed just as easily as it started.
"Amy! Load him in the trailer! We have to get out of here!"
Then she woke up in a cold sweat, after seeing the truck and trailer go crashing down the hill, one last time.
