CHAPTER 10: MEET MR. GREENWOOD

[January 26th, 2010]

After a long day of milling about the homeless population in teams of two for hours trying to find some answers, the exhausted agents return back to the headquarters with no helpful information. They quietly gather their personal items before walking out to the parking lot, downtrodden by their lack of progress throughout the day.

"We'll get back at it bright and early tomorrow morning," David Rossi encourages his team as they walk towards their vehicles. "We'll make some progress."

"Let's hope," Aaron Hotchner says grimly before nodding at his fellow agents. "Have a good night, everyone. Rest up and we'll meet back here and hopefully make some headway."

Prentiss, JJ, Derek, and Spencer nod their heads, all of them yearning to be between the sheets of their beds and fast asleep. They all wave goodbye to each other before climbing into their cars, pulling out of the parking lot and driving off in the directions of their homes.

As Spencer pulls up to his apartment building, his mental and physical fatigue hindering him from noticing the large black van parked across the street. If he had looked, he would have seen and recognized the man who sat in the passenger seat as the stranger who he had bumped into just three days ago.

Adam Greenwood hadn't always been a violent and - recently - homicidal man. If you asked any of his friends, they would only have the best of things to say about their buddy Adam. They'd say that he was a hard-worker and an all-around good guy; someone that you could always count on to listen to their problems or simply go get a beer with.

Little do they know that these titles and expectations are part of what made him snap.

Adam Greenwood had been releasing his pent-up aggression and anger on himself for years, and when that didn't help, he began to take it out on others.

After his first kill, he couldn't stop. Sure, it had just been a scraggly man bumming for money on the deserted sidewalk on the wall home from the bar one night, but the way Adam felt draining the life from that man made him feel in a way that he hadn't felt for years.

It made him feel powerful. It made him feel like more than just another cog in the machine. After his boss breathing down his neck for so long and nitpicking his every action, it felt nice to be in charge of somebody else for a change.

When Dr. Spencer Reid bumped into him on Saturday afternoon, Mr. Greenwood became completely obsessed with the younger man. He just had to have him. He just had to have power over him. He just had to see the life drain from his intelligent hazel eyes.

Up until this point, Greenwood's victims had all been low-profile. Fewer people would notice a peddler missing from a street corner than would notice a young and successful man with an abundance of friends. For three days, Greenwood has managed to refrain himself from fulfilling the almost overwhelming desire to take Spencer away. The only thing holding him back is the higher risk of being caught. Dr. Spencer Reid is a man who would be immediately missed if he went missing, unlike Adam's previous victims.

The man finally makes up his mind in a split second as he sees the object of his attention begin to ascend the metal staircase to enter his section of the apartment complex. Greenwood climbs out of his vehicle and quickly begins to trail the young agent, pulling his hood up to conceal his identity. He is as silent as a shadow as he nears Spencer, who is too preoccupied with the task of unlocking the door to his apartment to notice the figure looming behind him.

Spencer unlocks his door and enters, tossing his satchel to the floor and beginning to close the door when suddenly a hand shoots out, preventing the door from closing all the way.

And in that moment, Spencer Reid feels his blood turn to ice in his veins.
