"Life owes you nothing. It isn't fair and it is not a meritocracy. If you want something, you must work for it and believe that you already have it."- Unknown

I sit up, my eyes flying open, and a hoarse scream catching in throat, managing only to strangle my voice in its ferver to be let out.
I can feel a slab of metal under my body, ice cold and solid. Strong leather bands are securing my forearms and ankles to what seems to be an operating table.
As I slowly come to my senses, I look around the room and attempt to steady my breathing. I am bewildered by the sight of steel walls decorated with many many, beeping, blinking, machines. So many that I wondered how they could all be of use. The whole set up shouted 'lab', due to the fact that along with an abundance of science-y equipment, there were also heavy-duty lights hanging from the ceiling. They bathed the huge room in bright, white light... almost like a surgical room.
My table was up against the back wall, far from the plain, metal door in the opposite one ahead of me.
Looking to my left I only saw more machines againet the wall. Sighing, I looked to my right, my eyes traveling up a row of 8 identical tables and smaller machines until they land on something.
Or more, somebody...
He (it looked like a guy) was laying there, strapped down on an identical table at the far side of the room, about 15 feet away. His longer, messy, chocolate brown hair was covering one of his sharp, hazel eyes. The eye that was not was focused on.. me.
He was lean, wearing a orange prison-looking uniform, that I realized matches mine. An intent look was spread across his chiseled face as he studied me.
He must be around my age, 18, or older... judging from his complexion. I'm the first one to look away, and I attempt to tug at the restraints around my wrists. I don't know what I expected, they didn't budge.
Getting frusturated, my head tilts back as my muscles strain against the tough leather. I collapse back down on the table after only a minute, my breathing already faster from my desperation and excursion. My breathing then hitches slightly when I catch something out of the corner of my eye. This time, I turn again to my left and see a pair of piercing, green eyes that I couldn't have missed before.
I would have jerked a foot in the air, if it hadn't been for the tough leather binding my wrists. My heart reacted instead, and jumped into my throat, pulsating with the cold air. My voice attempted let loose but it catches and only a light squeak escapes my chapped lips.
The boys pale skin was almost translucent in the luminescent light. If you looked at him just right, it was almost as if he was a ghost. If not for his crown of disheveled ringlets, which deep ginger coloring created a fiery halo around the boys head.
He was so close I could count every freckle adorning his skin. I was so absorbed that I was startled when he winked at me. But then, as quickly as it had happened, he backed up and I was able to make note of his clothing. He donned a light grey lab coat with a small pin on the front that read "Fontenelle".
A lab assistant?
The coats hem fluttered around his knees as he quickly made his way to the front of the room.
The boy stopped in front of the steel door and lifted a lid next to it revealing a bright green button. He tapped it and closed the lid, before stepping back against the wall.Authors note: Hey guys, I started writing this book about 3 years ago and I have about 4 more chapters from back then that are still under major editing as my style and ability has progressed a lot since then. This will not be finished anytime soon sadly because I am a perfectionist and this is my first book. Please be open and maybe leave some constructive criticism or a vote. Either would help me a lot, but hate will be deleted and blocked immediately. Thanks guys! - Smurfy
