CHAPTER 2:
THE HANDS OF THE DEVIL
I was pulled from my reprieve when the old man cleared his throat, clearly not impressed that it was taking me so long to make a decision as small as this one, but it didn’t matter my decision was made. I felt my head nod, and heard the screams of my mind’s voice recede as I listened to the old man unlock and slide open the glass cabinet holding the crucifix necklace.
He stood quickly, way too quickly, and smiled at me. My mind continued to quietly scream its disapproval as the old shopkeeper moved lightly towards me. The crucifix spun slowly on its chain, while the sun coming in through the windows made light reflect off of it onto the walls in all directions. The old man held the necklace out before himself as if presenting me with a prized jewel, then he spoke softly, "May I?" was all that he said, I had no idea that those two words had held so much meaning then, not until it was already too late anyway. I nodded slowly then turned my back on him to lift my strait black dyed hair out of the way. He stretched his arms, which I noticed no longer looked frail and wrinkly, but strong and muscular, around me and rested them on my shoulders so he could hold the chain in both hands before bringing it back towards my throat. The metal of the necklace burnt me like ice when it touched my skin. The old man continued to pull the necklace back until I began to gag and claw at the chain to release, but he just let out a throaty chuckle. He sounded almost, young, but hey who was I to judge. I heard the clasp snap shut and felt the chain fall loose around my neck where it just sat, as if suspended in animation. With the tightness of the chain now gone, I was able to drag in a long breath, filling my lungs with much needed oxygen. Unfortunately the relief was not long live, the air tasted dirty and stale, and it made me gag and my eyes water. The stench was almost unbearable.
I slowly turned aroud to face the shopkeeper, but, to my complete surprise, found that he was no longer there. I frantically whipped my head from side to side, looking for him, but to no avail. He was nowhere to be seen. I begun to feel a little light headed, I had, in my hurry to get out the door with Georgia, skipped breakfast this morning so I just ignored it, and slowly started walking around the little store in search of the strange shopkeeper.
I hadn't gone very far when my throat began to constrict and my air supply was cut off. I stood alone gasping and clawing at my neck, but no relief came and i soon had black dots starting to cloud my vision. i swayed on my feet a little before dropping to my hands and knees, still gasping for the much needed oxygen. My eyes began to droop and my head crashed to the floor. As i laid there wheezing i heard a light, almost feminine, tread of footsteps coming my way. I managed to drag my eye open, and lift my head a little in order to see who was approaching me, but my eyes were so blurry it was practically impossible, all i saw was a distorted figure. i heard a tinkling laugh- yep definitely female- and just as my consciousness began to finally slip away i heard a foreign voice in my head. She spoke in a raspy voice, "remember me child, for it is I who will lead you from here on out, I am about to give you a great gift. You will no longer need to listen to that aweful voice in your head because i can take it away, but do try to forgive me, for this is going to hurt quite alot." the usual voice in my head began to scream. It got louder, and louder until it just cut off completely. Then, just as darkness began to roll over me, i heard a whimper from far away, it cried out to me, "W-why? Why did you not listen to me? Why did you stop believing in me, all I have ever done is help you and now you done a stupid thing like this." Well to say the voice was pissed was be an understatement, i was about to give up and just give in to the dark pull.
A manic laugh resonated inside my head and stopped all thinking and brain function. It continued to get louder, and the pain was unbearable, i just laid on the shop floor writhing in agony whilst clutching my head.
Then it all just stopped and I felt as if i was floating, suspended in nothing. Blissful nothingness. From a distance a hushed whisper came to me, "it has been said and so in turn, has been done. I hope your happy, from now on I can no longer communicate with you. You have played right into the hands of the devil, you believed in the DEMON!"
