James and Brenda headed to Walt's place across town. neither said anything as James drove. The whole time they were on the road, James kept a careful eye out for a tail, or anything that looked out of place. Once he was sure they weren't being followed, he backed the car into the driveway, opened the garage, and backed the car in. Once the car was in , he carefully looked around before closing the door. As they were pulling in, James had noticed the path from the back of the garage to the back of the house. Being careful not to attract any attention, they quickly made the way,across the short open space between the garage and the back of the house, and to the back door. Opening it they slid in and locked the door behind them. By now it was late afternoon. The better part of the day had been spent dealing with the police,and filling our reports, and starting to clean up the mess, once the bodies were removed. They realized at once how hungry they were. Brenda headed for the kitchen. While she looked to see what was there to eat. James headed for Walt's bedroom. Walt had told him where he had some extra guns stored. Opening a secret panel, in the closest, James found a number of handguns, and shotguns, and a couple of lever action Winchesters. Looking them over, he was impressed with his friends collection. he selected two pistol, another Colt 1911, and a revolver, another .38 special. He grabbed an extra box of ammunition for each, along with ammo for the .30-30 Winchester lever action. Replacing the panel, and leaving everything exactly as he found it, he carried the weapons, and ammo into the kitchen. By then Brenda had found stuff to make a sandwich. and some drinks.
He put the guns on the counter, and sat to eat with Brenda. Neither said much. Finally he spoke;
"I'm sorry Brenda. I never met for any of this to happen."
"I know. But what now?"
"I'm not sure. We have to lay low, until Bob can get some information on those men we shot this morning. Meanwhile they know about you too. That makes you in danger too." James got up and picked up the revolver. Bring it over to her he asked if she'd ever shot a gun before.
"Yes a long time ago. But I haven't touched a gun in years. "
"Here, this is a .38, You can handle it with no problem. "
With that he showed her how to load and fire it, The made practice several time with it empty, then made her load it, and unload several times. Once loaded for the final time, he handed it to her."You keep this with you at all times. ." he ordered her. She understood, and took the gun and put it in her purse. If she hand any fear, she didn't show it. James had enough fear for both of them. That fact they found the bar, scared him. He didn't dare say how how he felt, as he knew Brenda was terrified.
Being it was getting dark, the decided against turning on the lights, as Walt's car wasn't there, and the didn't want to raise any suspicions. so they used flashlights he'd found, and being careful not to shine them in a window, they locked up the place, and took the guns and ammo and headed upstairs to the bedrooms. They decided they best thing to do was to stay in the same room. So they settled down in the master bedroom.
The night was long. especially for James ,as he drifted in and out of sleep a number of times, At every little noise he jumped and was ready to do battle. Brenda didn't sleep well either. They made it through the night with no issues.
Both were tired and hungry the next morning. They woke early and didn't stop for breakfast, and headed back to the bar. Walter meet them at what was left of the back door. They went in. In the kitchen, Brenda managed to find stuff to make everyone some breakfast. Jim and Walt sat in the bar talking. A few meninutes later Brenda brought in their food. As they at the discussed their next move. There was a knock at the front of the bar. Both James and Walt drew their guns, and went carefully to see what it was. It turned out to be a street cop checking to make sure the building was secure. Not taking any chances, they noted his name and badge number, and his description. The rest of the day was spend getting plywood and boarding up the front of the bar. Once the bar was secure. There didn't seem to be any point to hanging around anymore. There was nothing they could do until the insurance agent came and they got the final police report for them. Jim called and talked to Robert. The had the reports back on the men they'd shot the day before. So they headed over to the police station. There was no point in avoiding being seen with the Robert. If know bout the bar then more than likely they know Jim and Robert are friends. So they took both cars and went to see Robert at the police station. Robert's office was small. Today it was much too small. With Robert behind his desk, and Jim, Walt and Brenda crammed in there sitting on a couple chairs they borrowed from other office. It was a tight fit. Four police folders lay on Bob's desk.
