I gave my aunt one last hug before she had to leave.
"Call me, okay?" I replied with a nod as I kissed her right cheek. She smiled at me. I love when she smiles at me. She could melt Olaf just by smiling at him. Her smile was beautiful and heartwarming. She could light up a room with her perfect teeth. I would miss seeing her smile at me.
A tear fell down my cheek at the thought of never seeing her smile again. She gently brushed it away. "Don't cry. Please. I know life may seem terrible right now, but it's going to get better. I promise."
I sighed before looking back at the woman and man who would now be my guardians. I smiled at them before turning back to my aunt, my face slightly brighter this time. "I know." I whispered and she nodded.
"Take good care of her." She said turning to the couple.
"Of course! I'll take care of her as if she's one of my own." I smiled as her last words rolled off her lips. I looked back to my aunt to see her response, but she was already walking out the door. I pressed my lips into a thin line as I tried to hold back the urge to run after her.
No Emma. You can do this. You're not some little girl anymore and you're not going to act like one. Turn away before you start to cry again.
I turned back around to face the couple once again. They still had their smiles of joy on their faces. I mentally slapped myself as I remembered thinking that they were going to torture me. Gosh, that was stupid. These people wouldn't hurt a fly.
"I'm Linda, but you can call me mom." The woman said as she walked over to me and picked up my hands and held them in hers. I smiled at her and she nodded in reassurance.
"And, and I'm Greg! But you can call me pop, or poppy, or papa, or-" I cut him off with my giggling. He smiled at me, and I knew it was a genuine smile because it reached his eyes.
"How about dad?" I said as I went over to hug him. He was surprised at first but then returned the hug.
"Dad's great." He whispered as he kissed my forehead lightly. I liked this family. I really, really liked this family. But that was until-
"Oh! I forgot to bring down our son. How could I be so forgetful?" Linda said as she went over to the staircase. I pulled away from Greg and narrowed my eyes in confusion towards her.
"Son?" She turned and looked at me with raised eyebrows.
"Oh, yes. He's around your age. I think he's in your grade too!" She said sounding a little too excited. But I thought it was cute haw she was talking about him. "Austin! Can you come down here please? There's someone I'd like for you to meet." I heard a groan and then some footsteps come from upstairs while Linda came back over and stood behind me. I looked at her for a moment before turning my gaze back to the staircase.
A beautiful, I'm talking breathtakingly gorgeous teenage boy came into view. My eyes widened as he came closer to us. I felt my mouth come open a bit and tried to close it, but I couldn't. I swear, it has a mind of its own.
I'm guessing he noticed my little expression because he looked down at me and smirked. "Who's she and why is she looking at me like a fat kid looks at cake?" I gasped and quickly closed my mouth and looked away. I felt my face start to get warm. Luckily, Linda came in and broke the awkward silence that was forming.
"Austin, this is Emma. We're going to be taking care of her for a while." She said as she placed a hand on my shoulder.
"And I should care, why?" I huffed at his rudeness. I just took an hour drive to get here, left everything behind, and he has enough courage to ask why he should care. It took all of my strength to not slap him across the face and tell him off. I could backhand him so hard, that he'd go all the way to China and back.
Linda narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. "You should care because she's been through a lot and I'm sure that you being rude to her is the last thing she needs."
You go Linda!
"Now, if you don't mind, please show Emma to her room."
Or not.
He rolled his eyes as he picked up one of my suitcases, specifically, the smallest. His parents left the room and he headed towards the staircase. I couldn't believe he had the nerve to make me carry my other suitcases. To be fair, he was twice my size.
It took me about ten minuets to get my suitcases up the staircase. It was hard, but I managed. And by managed, I mean stacked them on top of each other and pushed them, with all my force, up the stairs. They only fell on me about TWO TIMES!
I looked over and saw Austin leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. You could see his perfectly toned biceps through the tight shirt he was wearing.
"Well it took you long enough." My mouth dropped open. I couldn't believe this guy! Was this real? Could someone actually be this rude?
"Excuse me." I narrowed my eyes and put my hands on my hips. "It probably took me so long because each one of these suitcases are half my size." I said pointing at the suitcases that were now toppled over on the ground.
He just stared at me and rolled his eyes. "Whatever. Your room's right here." He pushed open a door that was to his left. I peeked inside and saw a furnished room with white walls. It had a grey fuzzy carpet, and was decorated with small nicknacks all around the small room. It had a little bathroom inside it which was perfect for me.
I kicked my luggage the rest of the way into the room and Austin placed my other suitcase on the bed. He stared at me for a second as I looked around.
I looked over at him and narrowed my eyes. "What?"
He just sighed before answering me. "Oh, nothing. Have a nice stay." Is all he said as he plastered a cocky smile on his face and left the room.
Maybe this family wasn't as perfect as I thought it was.
