"Miss Anderson!"
Akilah jumped half a mile in her desk, hitting her knee.
"Yeh, what?"
"Miss Anderson, how do you expect me to teach you if you're asleep all the time?"
Miss Hall looked like she would explode. This was the third time this week that Akilah had drifted off in class.
"Go to the principle now, I won't tolerate you disturbing the class any longer! And bring your things, I'm sure you will take the rest of the period."
Akilah dragged herself out of her seat, alnost dragging her basic black backpack along with her and slumped out the door, stretching her shoulders as she went. The brown haired girl didn't care about detention time. She knew most of the material already.
The hall was quiet as Akilah walked past. She wished for a few seconds that she was at home in her bed to sleep, and then her hand reached out to open the door to the principles office.
Stifling a yawn, she walked in, only to plant face first into another person.
"What"
That was all her tired brain could think.
She raised her head, and poked noses with another boy who had looked down to see her.
Akilah backed up quickly as soon as their eyes met.
"Uh, was this this a bad time Mr. Foz, I can come by later,"
She backed herself up by the door, which had closed, and started groping around for the handle.
"No no, this is a good time actually. I was about to call Miss Sonders to help Jason around, but if you're free you can do nicely."
Akilah searched in her brain for a Miss Sonders and found a mental image of a black haired girl who always stayed in the corner of every class. She glanced again at 'Jason' and decided that it was better to lead him around then to get detention.
"Euhhh, sure, I have plenty of time."
She placed her hands behind her back trying to look innocent of sleeping in class.
"Well then, Jason, this is Akilah Anderson. Akilah, this is Jason. He just moved all the way from Arizona, and I think he has some classes with you." Mr. Foz glanced down at a piece of paper in his hand and continued. "So all I really need you to do is show him all of his classes and make sure he doesn't get lost."
Akilah had avoided looking at Jason, but as the principle was talking, she caught his eye for a second. His eyes were blue.
"Sure, ok."
Akilah barely got these words out before she was pushed out of the office with Jason.
Alone in the hallway, she was almost at a loss of what to do.
"Can I see your schedule?"
Jason smiled at her.
"Yeah. I'm sorry if you went in there for something." He gestured with his head to the door as he handed her a piece of paper.
Akilah shook her head. "No it's cool, I was only here to get detention."
Jason looked confused.
"Why? You seem well behaved."
She smiled a bit.
"I fell asleep in class."
He nodded once.
She swished her hair over her shoulder and looked at his schedule. He had, lets see, 3rd period band and 6th period language arts with her. In a few minutes the bell would ring for third, so she decided to just stay.
"Alright, you got band and reading with me," shoving the paper into his hands.
Akilah leaned up against the wall, pushing her backpack to the floor.
Her mind whirred as she thought about leading a new kid around with her. She already had many friends, friends who laughed when she drew dicks in permanent marker on the whiteboard and congratulated her when she managed to get in trouble. What did she need Jason for?The latter was shifting around on the wall, trying to stay still.
Akilah was wishing she was back in her class getting yelled at.
Then the bell rang.*cries because I started this in March*
